How do I equip items with key binds, I've died because of the ineffective right click equip function

Right click the item and press a number

all types, gasoline, axe, chainsaw, Im right clicking items then pressing 2

Well, weapons cannot be put in hotbuttons, and that process is for hotbuttons past 1 and 2 (3-9) the first 2 slots can only be used for weapons and the quick select is ctrl+right click.

so how do I quick add items to my hotbar quickly?
