Custom Maps - No XP or Cash Drops
Is this supposed to be the case or is this simply bugged?

Frequently, I read that those maps are supposed to give at least XP, but they do not seem to do that, yeah.

If you want to power-level, go Endless Waves on any map. Crystal Vault seems the easiest, considering there are Salvage Recyclers on the map, if I recall correctly. Doing 30 waves for achievements, my character jumped from around level 50 to around level 75 and I could have easily gone further if it wasn't so boring. With a good setup, you might even be able to afk the mode Endless Waves.

Already uninstalled this man, it's a very interesting concept but poor execution, too many issues.

If you like the idea of this game, there are some similar games. I can recommend the Sanctum franchise (TD+FPS) and the Orcs Must Die! Franchise (TD+RPG).

I didn't really like Sanctum but I really enjoyed OMD 1 and 2. I have a recommendation for you as well, Xmorph, a blend of top down shooter and tower defence. There are only light RPG elements in the form of an upgrade system but both the TDS and TD are very well implemented.

Thanks for the recommendation, I tried the demo that they released at some point (or was it free to play for a short time?), but I couldn't get it to work. I am still eyeballing it, but not knowing for sure if I manage to get it to run kinda sucks.

They prevented them from giving xp/loot because people were just making grinder maps.
