How to use the Map Editor in Deathtrap
Project window

This is where you manage your maps. The basic functions allow you to create new maps, edit, clone or delete existing ones with the buttons in the upper right corner.

Map window

The first step in creating your level is to draw the map itself. This is done by placing ground tiles into a grid, then putting chaos portals, gates, and trap locations on them. Left click places objects, Right click removes them.
Once the map is drawn, you need to create paths for the enemies to follow. Highlight a path in the list on the right, then select a chaos portal as its starting point. The icon in the path list will change to reflect this. Next, click on the grid to designate navigational points and draw the actual path. You must end each path at a gate, otherwise it won’t be valid and you won’t be able to assign enemies to follow it. Paths have a single start and end point, but it is perfectly fine to use the same portal or gate for multiple paths as is crossing paths.
It is possible to draw paths outside ground tiles. This of course makes no sense for ground creatures but it can be used to make a level more interesting with flyers.

Monster window

Here you can create various monsters that you can add to groups later on. To create a new monster, select an existing one from the list on the left, and hit the Duplicate button on the right. You can rename the new monster by simply writing its name over. On the right panel, you can see the strength and spawn gap of the selected monster along with its speed and damage points.
You can add skills to a monster by browsing from the skills available below, and left-clicking the skill you would like to add to the monster. You can filter both the monsters and the skills by clicking on the various filter buttons at the top and at the right side of the monster panel.
Don't forget to save your monster by clicking the Save button on the right!

Group window

At the Group window, you can set up groups that you can later add in the wave editor. To create a new group, click the "Create New Group" button on the right. You can add monsters to the freshly created group by clicking on the monster portraits appearing in the library below. If you wish, you can add a monster to your group multiple times. Remember to name your group by clicking on its name and simply writing it over. If you are finished, click "Save" on the right.

Wave window

The Wave window is where the enemy groups are added to the map and organized into waves. Select a group from the list on the lower left, and drag it up to the wave diagram. The rows of the diagram represent the paths of the map. The location of a group in the row relative to the start of the row determines the time at which the group arrives during the wave. The total time value displayed in the lower right is the time when the last enemy of the given wave enters the level. It is a rough indication of how long a wave lasts.
The group strentgh value exists to give you a general idea of how difficult it is to defeat a group. It is also summarized for each wave as well as the entire level.

Finalize Window

This is where you put on the finishing touches of your level. You can add title and description to your map, as well as set the starting and wave resources. The difficulty settings are just an indication of the level’s overall difficulty for your players, they don’t make the map easier or more difficult. Once you are happy with everything, you can test or export your map or even publish it on Steam.

More to be added soon!
