While you have someone threatened at gunpoint, you can fully control them. This means that you can also access their inventory by right-clicking them (just make sure you don't have a goon with a gun selected to avoid any misfires!) This allows you to drop any items they have, keys and money included. You can also force NPCs to e.g. open doors or use items while held at gunpoint. :)
Regarding 'softie' gameplay, I'm totally the same, so far I've gotten everything but the Super Fly and the newest maps done without killing anyone, and only knocking out couple of fanatics who wouldn't listen to any reason. (I'm looking at you, horsehead and police chief!)
We realise there's an issue with some of the commands and functionality being a bit obscure, and might try to improve the tutorial. To help us, please tell us what types of features/commands have you missed out only to realise much later they were in the game? What needs to be presented better? How to improve the tutorial?
In another way, you can also use 2-3 goons to hold people and move them in room to lock them.
As the devs say, you can ask hostage to drop their stuff... exept guard baton.
