If we ultimately design against the variations in the maps, it means that we will address the need for replayability some other way instead. One major advantage for replayability we will have in the end is the level editor. With this, there will hopefully be plenty of truly unique content available with or without level variations. :)
its fine however if you want to focus on different aspects of the game until its more or less polished but it would add much if really bloody difficult levels were created that you want to play more often to get every last penny. perhaps this can be simply done with a possible leveling editor in the end where you select a few random spots for every item you place with a simple mouse-click. and the game randomizes this with a basic algorithm on every start of the level.
of course i have no insight, and if this really requires tremendous amount of work. i could live without it.
The random location key could work well just like you described. We'll see how it goes :)
