I wasn't getting my xbox controller to work with the game, then I noticed a painfully obvious solution: None of the controller keybinds were assigned. Once I set those, my controller is working...mostly flawlessly. Some folks have mentioned that the mapping isn't perfect. for some reason my A and B buttons are reversed when going through menus, but I can fight with it and that's good enough for me. Just thought I'd share what ended up working for me.
