You might remember me in that I was one of the first to buy and comment on this game when it launched on steam (I was late to the kickstarter when I first noticed this). I had high hopes, reported a few bugs, etc. I'm a software developer too... with a family. I get it. I've been at various startup companies (not mine). I've put in countless hours at those businesses and dealt with all of the ups and downs of life. I have still succeeded at delivering on what I promised to each of those companies, even to my own detriment at times.
Here's my advice and please take it for what it's worth... The forum is littered with promises to finish/update the game. Do it or don't. At this point, unless you start committing to actually pushing the updates on an extremely regular basis for a significant enough period of time, it is assumed that this game is abandoned.
Frankly, I don't know why, but I clicked on this game today hoping to see some solid progression. I have a ton of other games I could play, but I clicked on yours, and again, I have to say, I'm kind of let down that its in this state still. No amount of time off from your day job, change in status, etc. can fix this effort.
Ultimately, to bring this ship out of mothballs, you're probably going to have to start a beta branch and roll frequent updates in to this weekly or bi-weekly, and then final commits at a minimum monthly, and get all of the dedicated people you had on the forum to do the early access thing and test the crud out of this. You're going to have to commit to sitting down each night and spending time on this with results getting dropped to the community and reviewing feedback - even if it's not beneficial to whatever else is going on in your life. You'll also probably get some Twitch action going on where you or others are showcasing the game. Take a look at Cogmind for a developer who's committed to delivering. I really don't have any specific answers to this, bring in someone else if you need to... But do something different from what you have been if you really want to finish this.
Please take this for what it's worth and please consider this as just a healthy criticism regarding this effort. I believe you've always had nothing but the best intentions for this game and the people who supported you. Again, it's your choice what you want to do with this, but your game engine is aging, the community support is missing, and you're still discussing your commitment to a game that's (although I don't know your sales numbers) currently dead. I wish you the best and hope you succeed in whatever you decide.
I'm looking forward to being one of the testers - I enjoyed providing feedback the first time and was impressed with your responsiveness and honesty regarding this project.
I will check back on this after a couple of months. Thanks for being so responsive to the community.
