Where do I find the Log file to send to the developer when something goes wrong?

On Windows the log file is now located in the C:/Users under AppData/LocalLow which is the same place you'll find created GIFs, saved Level Editor levels, etc.

To easily find it open Windows Explorer and enter the location: %LOCALAPPDATA%Low\South East Games\Paint The Town Red

Inside that folder you'll find the NewestLog.txt file and the PreviousLog.txt files to send to the developers (as of version 0.11.4. Before that use the output_log.txt file). The NewestLog.txt will be from the most recent run of the game and the PreviousLog.txt will be from one before that.

You can use the button in the lower right of the main menu to send your last game's log file to the developers if it crashed, froze or had a fatal error.

If putting the log on the forum, you can paste the contents of the log to https://pastebin.com and create a link to it to paste here on the forum.

I've encountered a bug in the game

Please pause the game and use the bug report tool in the lower right of the pause screen to submit a bug report to the developer. Include a brief description of the bug and preferably be looking at the bug if it is visual as a small screenshot will be uploaded.

Along with your description of the issue and screenshot, the log file from the current session will also be uploaded which usually will contain the most important data for the developer.

The game won’t start after updating. It just pops up the “Preparing to launch Paint the Town Red” window and nothing happens.

Solution #1: Restart your PC

The game opens in a tiny window and it can't be resized

Solution #1:
  1. In your Steam library right click the game and choose "Properties"
  2. Click the "SET LAUNCH OPTIONS..." button
  3. Enter: "-screen-width 1024 -screen-height 768" (Without quotes. It should look like this[segws.com])
  4. Start the game and in the Graphics Option menu, set your desired resolution
  5. Exit the game
  6. In your Steam library right click the game and choose "Properties"
  7. Click the "SET LAUNCH OPTIONS..." button
  8. Remove the "-screen-width 1024 -screen-height 768" text you entered earlier

The game crashes (or freezes)!

Solution #1:

  1. In your Steam library right click the game and choose "Properties"
  2. WINDOWS ONLY: In the "GENERAL" tab in Properties, click the "SET LAUNCH OPTIONS..." button and enter "-force-d3d9" in there and click OK and try running the game again. (Without quotes. It should look like this[segws.com])

Report the crash:

If the game crashes please report it by doing the following:

1. In your Steam library right click the game and choose "Properties"

2. In the "LOCAL FILES" tab in Properties, click the "BROWSE LOCAL FILES..." button which should open Explorer to the location Steam installed the game

3. There should be a folder named with today's date and some more numbers. Inside that folder should be 3 files. Email all 3 files in a zip file or otherwise at least just the output_log.txt file to contact@southeastgames.com along with a description of what happened when the game crashed.

If there isn't a folder with today's date, go into "PaintTheTownRed_Data" and find the output_log.txt file and email that to us instead along with a description of the problem.

Solution #2:

Try temporarily disabling your antivirus or whitelisting the PaintTheTownRed.exe. See here for some information on how to do this: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=4361-MVDP-3638

Solution #3:

Try forcing the game to run in DirectX 9 mode.
  1. In your Steam library right click the game and choose "Properties"
  2. Click the "SET LAUNCH OPTIONS..." button
  3. Enter: "-force-d3d9" (Without quotes. It should look like this[segws.com])

Low Performance

Solution #1:
  • Lower the resolution in the Graphics Options
  • Apply the Low graphics preset in the Graphics Options
  • Disable the GIF Replay Capture (while paused during a level)

Solution #2: If you are on a laptop you might need to tell it to use your discrete GPU instead of the integrated graphics. For example with an NVIDIA card open the NVIDIA Control Panel (right click on your desktop to see the option) and then under Global Settings choose the NVIDIA High Performance option instead of the integrated option as your preferred graphics processor.

If you have another problem post it here on the forum. If we don't respond within an hour then we're probably sleeping, but we will respond and help asap.
If you get a specific error message then you can also often find solutions that have worked for other people by searching Google for the error.

Why on earth would I need '-force-d3d9' to make this running properly?
Otherwise it just crashes after the splash screen.

i dont feel like its necesary to make anew thread for this so i guess ill just say it here.

i think i found kind of a cheaty way to kill the boxer boss, because if you kill the guy with the machete, and you go to the boxer and take one hard swing at his legs it iwll cut them off and he dies instantly.

kind of cool incentive to get that machete but not sure if this was meant to be

Nice. Yeah that's probably something I'll change a bit by making his bones stronger.

Hey guys! I have a problem with running the game. Whenever I hit PLAY I get Steam Error - Application load error: 3:0000065432. I tried to look it up but I couldn't find anything useful. Do you guys have any idea what might be a problem?

Can you try running the PaintTheTownRed.exe file directly? Right click the game in Steam and choose Properties. In the LOCAL FILES tab click "BROWSE LOCAL FILES..." and that should take you to it.

Otherwise I'm not sure, from what I've seen with other games it seems to be a problem with Steam or antivirus software. Let me know if running the exe directly works.

Hey! I tried to run the game from .exe file directly but it didn't work. However, your suggestion about antivirus software reminded me that I had similar problem with a different game some time ago (It crashed as soon as I hit PLAY but back then I didn't get any error message). The problem was Deep Guard. To all people using F-secure: try to disable Deep Guard function, it helped in my case.

Thanks Ethernic:)

Sorry about that. Once you force the game to close with the Window Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete or Ctrl+Shift+Esc), still go to the install directory and look for the output_log.txt in the PaintTheTownRed_Data directory and send me that following the same instructions for a crash.
I have ausas gaming laptop and iv been following this game for a whail but it lags i tried the profrmance recmdation you gus put up but it did not worck
