I can't seem to texture indivisual blocks, just the whole map

I cant seem to find a way to texture an indivisual block, its just ends up re-texturing the whole map. I'v figured out that when I click on the menu (to go into the texture tool) it unselects the block as if I where clicking off it, I don't see anyone else complaining about this problem to guess I'm just doing something wrong. Does anyone know who I could successfuly texture an indivisual block with the materials tool?

When you click "Materials", choose the "create new material" option, then select the new entry that appears and choose the texture you want. Then, there should be some options nearby that let you either texture an individual face or an entire object with whatever material you have selected.

I am aware this post is old but I might as well answer anyways.
