Troubleshooting and Bug Reporting Guide
Computers are complicated beasts. The game may not work correctly on your computer. This guide contains things to try to fix it on your own and known incompatibilities.

If you can't get the game to work, please do get in touch with me via email ( zarkonnen@gmail.com ), Discord, or Steam chat. If your computer meets the specs, I want the game to be able to run on it. Whether the problem is ultimately with your machine or with a bug in the game, I want to get to the bottom of things in all cases.

If we really can't get it to work, remember that you can refund the game. If you're outside the automatic refund period but specify that the game doesn't work, this is usually enough to get a refund.

Black screen, crashes with AMD Graphics Cards (RX 580 etc)
If you have a recent AMD graphics card like the RX 580, make sure you have the stable drivers (currently 22.5.1) installed. The optional drivers (currently 22.8.1) are not compatible with the game.

For details on how to fix this: https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/app/342560/discussions/0/3437955554623623017/

Intel HD Graphics Cards
The game is not compatible with Intel HD 2000 / 3000 graphics cards under Windows 10. Intel does not support that combination of hardware and operating system: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000005526/graphics-drivers.html

Mods
Note that using mods may cause the game to slow down or crash. Do let me know if you're having problems caused by a mod, but in some cases the fix may be "don't use that broken mod then".

Multiplayer disabled notice
If you see a notice saying "Multiplayer disabled due to altered data files. Reinstall to fix." and reinstalling doesn't work, do the following:
  • Go to the game's install directory. To find it, right-click on the game in Steam, choose "Properties", choose the "Local Files" tab in the window that appears, and click "Local Files". This will open the install directory.
  • Uninstall the game through Steam.
  • Delete any remaining items in the install directory.
  • Install the game through Steam.
Note that your saved games and ship designs are stored elsewhere and not affected by reinstalling.

Known Issues
Mac support for Steam workshop is currently disabled.

Some high-DPI screens can cause clicks to be offset from where I should be. Enable using the system cursor to work around this.

Kaspersky Internet Security 2018 previously flagged the game, but should no longer do so now if you have up-to-date definitions.

Troubleshooting if the game is crashing or failing to launch
  • Try reinstalling the game.
  • Make sure your graphics card drivers are up to date.
  • Plays.tv and Raptr are known to cause the game to crash. If your computer is running either of them, turn them off or uninstall them. Note that some computers come bundled with this software, so it may be active on your machine even if you did not install it yourself.
  • Try running the game using System Java.
  • On Linux, make sure you have the xorg-xrandr package installed.
  • Try running the game by opening the install folder, right-clicking on "game.jar" and choosing "Run with Java Runtime" or similar. To open the install folder, right-click on the game in your Steam library, choose "Properties", to to the "Local Files" tab, click "Browse Local Files...". Note that you have to install Java on your computer for this step to be available.

Clean Reinstall
If the above does not work, doing a clean game reinstall may:
  • Go to the game install folder
  • Uninstall the game via Steam
  • Make sure that there aren't any files still in the game install folder
  • Rename %APPDATA%\AirshipsGame to %APPDATA%\AirshipsGameOld
  • Reinstall the game via Steam

Troubleshooting if the game window appears in odd places or is unable to go fullscreen
  • On Windows, right-click on Airships.exe in the install folder, select "properties", choose the "compatibility" area and check "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings".

Getting Help
If you are unable to get the game to work properly, please contact me[gmail.com]. Please include the following information if possible, as it will make diagnosis a lot easier. Remember that the game works fine on *my computer*, so I really need this information to figure out what's going wrong on yours.

Windows
  • Your operating system version and graphics card type.
  • The log file from %APPDATA%\AirshipsGame\log.txt. To open APPDATA, open the start menu, type "%APPDATA%", and hit enter.
  • Any files starting with hs_err from the install folder.
  • Immediately after the game has crashed or failed to launch, go into the Event Viewer, and copy any errors logged in the "Application" category. To open Event Viewer, open the start menu, type "Event Viewer", and hit enter.

Mac
  • Your operating system version and graphics card type.
  • The log file from ~/Documents/AirshipsGame/log.txt. To find it, go to your home folder, open Documents, then open AirshipsGame.
  • Any files starting with hs_err from the install folder.
  • Immediately after the game has crashed or failed to launch, go into the Console, and copy the last ten log lines or so. To open the Console, hit command-space, type "Console" and press enter.

Linux
  • Your operating system version and graphics card type.
  • The log file from ~/.airshipsgame/log.txt.
  • Any files starting with hs_err from the install folder.
  • Try launching the game directly from the command line. Include any messages printed out.

Is it a know Case. that the Conquest game mode. IS prone to bugs. Like making your Air ships slam in to the ground just as the game battle starts. Or the fact. I can't replace them before the battle starts. Or the fact when I stick them to reserve, then try to place them back on the battle map. They are underground. and out of sight. I only know my ship was underground. because that's where all their shots where going. :/

then there is the constent Puasing of the conquest game. But in reallety it just laged out. and is still running with out you. what the hell is all this!!??!!!? Sorry but I'm lossing my pasents with conquest. >:(

You have to report bugs for me to fix them. If you don't report them, I don't know about them, and I can't fix them. All the patience in the world won't help. If you did report them somewhere, I'm afraid I didn't see them. For maximum effectiveness, email me at zarkonnen@gmail.com .

You mention the following problems:

  • Ships fall to the ground at the start of combat
  • Unable to replace ships before the battle starts (not sure what you mean by replace here)
  • Placing ships from the reserve puts them underground
  • Constant pauses of the conquest screen

That last one I'm aware of and working on. It should be better in the dev 10 update. Would you like to try out the new conquest alpha? You can let me know if the pausing issues are fixed there.

The others sound like the reported and actual service ceiling of the ships don't match up. Are there any particular ship designs this happens with? Any mods that cause it to happen? Please let me know.

When I said about replace. I mean I can't move them to a different spot on the pre-Battle Battle-zone. So they don't Land on each other, when they want to fall out of the sky. I could click the move button. But then I couldn't place them any where. So I could only cansel what I was doing to try to move them from being under and above each other in the Prebattle window. All of these Bugs only seem to happen while playing conquest. I'll see if I can recreate them on a Constent Bases. It maybe the case. that there was some Loading bug Or some thing while Generating the Conquest game mod(I don't save Conquest. So this was a fresh game). But I only really get Bugs while trying to play Conquest.

Is there a Game log? I can post to you. When I do have these bugs again.

Thanks! All of this does point to the ships secretly being too heavy to fly. Huh. Do let me know if you can reproduce it!

I believe I found the cause of the bug. So I tested that ship I was building in Conquest, in the custom battle Mode. And it had the same bugs. So I started testing out what part of the ship was causing this Bug list. And I found out it's the side mounted Suspendium Balloons. From the "Air Ships Boosted" mod . I'll make a post to that Mod's dev. asking them to take a look and to fix it. For some reason. those 2 modules. Can't lift a ship on their own. At least not at the start of a battle for some reason. :/

What is the file location of the mods downloaded for windows?

I can't find one numbered 342560 in the workshop files.
Zarkonnen  [developer] 18 May, 2018 @ 3:12am
%APPDATA%\AirshipsGame\steam\mods
Cynical_Teacup 18 May, 2018 @ 4:15am
Well, i checked out the mod files and saw the whole folder was empty so I unsubscribed from it and deleted the empty folder in an attempt to redownload it and now it refuses to download it at all.
Newly subscribed mods work however, but this one just refuses to download.

I will try some other stuff and see if that works.

Thanks for the file locations.
Cynical_Teacup 18 May, 2018 @ 4:30am
Okay, I got it to work sorta.

I downloaded the mod files from this third party russian site instead of the internal steam workshop and it works.
I guess its a steam workshop problem.

Thanks for the help.

im having an issue with the new flags. when i go into the editor and try to place one they come out as stiff squares with only the emblem color on them, and they dont flow in battle either. when i exit the "command and flight" ship editor, it tells me that my graphics card is uncompatible. i have a intel HD graphics 630 and a nvidia geforce GTX 1050 and im running windows 10.
Zarkonnen  [developer] 26 May, 2018 @ 1:06am
@Squiddo - Please email me your log file from %APPDATA%\AirshipsGame\log.txt - it would appear that the flag shader has a problem on some machines including yours. - zarkonnen@gmail.com

So due to the recent update I overworked some of my design, because they are over budget now, however when I want to move the new design with the same name from the standart list to the folder they were previously in, the design switches back to the pre-update design.

Can you describe in more detail what you're doing and what you expect to happen? Are you trying to overwrite a file? Kannst es auch auf Deutsch beschreiben. :)
