The issue is related to which template the controller has on it when trying to configure the controller.
I had the gamepad template on. Since the game doesn't actually support gamepad fully, it was causing the crash. I switched it to Keyboard and Mouse, and the issue ceased. I was able to customize the controller fully without any further crashes.
Though, now I can't even get far enough into configuring the controller to change the settings. As soon as, within Big Picture Mode, I go to Spintires>Manage Settings>Configure Controller, BPM crashes. The game doesn't even have to be running. How did you change the template without BPM crashing?
I cannot seem to get far enough along in the config process to test your fix. This makes me very sad.
Im still having this problem too, only with the game contagion. its the only game i have that does it too. such a wierd bug...
I fixed my issues by first disabling steam cloud, deleting \Steam\userdata\youruserid#\GameID# and uninstalling then reinstalling the game.
I think a bad SC profile was causing the issue, idk
Unfortunately this did not work for me I disabled the steam cloud in
Steam > Settings > Cloud
Unchecked the box
then went to \steam\userdata\userid\gameid
Deleted the entire contents
Uninstalled game
Reinstalled game still have cloud disabled and it's still instantly crashing as soon as I go to configure the controller
was fine before the last steam update this is nerve racking So guess I will continue to look for things to try, I've even overwritten things within the steam controller profiles for the game from another game just to give that a go with the same results
