Steam Link

Steam Link

What are my No-Pi-OS options?
My plan WAS to set up a Pi5 with Steam Link and Kodi.

In the past I used a hardware Steam Link (still going strong!) and a Pi4 (LibreElec). With the Pi5 I wanted to use one device for both purposes because the Pi5 promised better performance than the hardware Steam Link (2K video or better).

Sadly, it turned out less than ideal for many reasons, none of wich were directly the fault of the Steam Link software. I'm back on my faithfull hardware Steam Link and the Pi4 with Libreelec. The Pi5 is (for now) abandoned.

Now I just want to tinker a bit and try different options. What would work if I want to use the latest version of Steam Link?
Install Steam Link under Ubuntu on Pi5 (just for fun)?
Install LibreElec on Pi5 and somehow integrate Steam Link?
Install Batocera or any other retro gaming oriented OS?

Ideally I'd like to have an installation that lets me use Steam Link AND Kodi and can be controlled with an XBox Controller and hopefully with my TV remote (at least Kodi).

I second this. I installed Alpine Linux on my RPi5 (that's the only distro that doesn't base itself on Debian with its often-outdated packages that also works on an RPi5), and since Alpine uses musl instead of glibc, the best option would be to use a Flatpak. However, the current Flatpak is only available for x86_64 architectures. Now I could try and figure out how to make a Flatpak based on the Raspbian version (like I did for another program), but that would be too much effort. And who knows how Debian-dependent the binary is.
I tried to run the steamlink app on Ubuntu 24.04 on a Tegra X1… Of course it didn't work because the current steamlink is very tied to Debian.

I managed to write a script installing steamlink in a custom folder and pulling the dependencies from Debian in that custom folder. The steamlink app then started, I was able to pair a computer and explore the configuration menu and things like that.

But as soon as I start streaming the steamlink app crashes with this log:

```
vidout_simple_new: Failed to create dmbauf control
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
```

This is using the arm64 Nvidia proprietary driver for Tegra X1.

Funny typo in “dmabuf” by the way.
