Fan Game Ad Revenue
On GameJolt, there is an Ad Revenue system. If the game you are getting money off of is a FNaF Fan Game, are we still allowed to collect Ad revenue?

You can, but I am just wondering if Scott would be okay with it. Keep in mind that I would use the money towards making games with my own IP, and that the money isn't just coming from FNaF Fan Games.

Yeah, you get money from how many views you get and Ad

Well, Scott is okay with Ad Revenue on videos of FNaF, and stuff like Trailers for Fan Games, so I'm not sure why Scott wouldn't be okay with GameJolt ad revenue. But if he isn't I will just have to disable it.

That would be a good idea

As I pointed out a few times on other threads, it is a Problem when money is involved...

Money is involved in both situations. Commentators earn through ad revenue just as you are asking for. The difference here is that creating a game using Scott's property wouldn't be fair use since it is not for education, criticsm, or commentary so Scott can take legal action against you should you use his property to make a game for profit.

I'm not worried about the ad revenue from Gamejolt.

Is there a problem making ad revenue? I mean, fan-games do take a lot of work and time to make.

Can I make a kickstarter to a fangame that will not contain any assets or characters from fnaf, but may contain similar gameplay in some parts? The name will be "Five Nights At the Sleepover" and the story will have nothing to do with fnaf.

No idea how this thread got revived, but I suppose I'll provide you some advice.

If the game is just similar to FNaF in some aspects, and the characters and story are completely different, I'd recommend just renaming the game. At that point, it's pretty much entirely your game to do what you want with it. Gameplay mechanics by themselves are not protected by copyright, so you'll be fine unless you make a 1:1 reskin of FNaF.

Good luck on development!

I have just finished developing a game in unity (my first completed one) and it is similar to fnaf in some ways. They both involve an office, camera, and animatronics with similar AI, however, I have added new animatronics, controls are different, and it all has nothing to do with fnaf. Would I be able to sell the game on itch.io or would I just have to stick with the Ad Revenue. I have spent the past 4 months working on it and I am really proud of it (even though it isn't fantastic)

I don't need the money or anything, I just thought it would be nice to get SOMETHING back.
Thanks

No idea how this thread got necro'd, but as someone who's gone further into gamdev since this thread was created, I can try to answer. I believe that if the game is not directly related to FNaF (characters, locations, lore, etc.) you shouldn't have a problem selling the game on itch.io. CASE: Animatronics is sold on Steam and it's pretty similar to the sort of thing you're describing. I could only see real issues popping up if the game is called "[blank] Nights at [blank]'s" and is basically a carbon copy of one of the actual FNaF games.

Aside from that, your game is all yours, and you should be good to do what you please with it! Although, I would recommend mentioning in the game's description that it is inspired by FNaF so people won't jump to "shameless ripoff."

Thank you so much. I'll come up with a cool name. Any place where I can check out some of your stuff?

My stuff? Uh, if you mean games I made, I don't exactly have much I can show. Most of my best work was in the game design college course I took last year, and I don't have the files for any of those projects anymore since they were on my school laptop that I haven't had access to for a year. I'm pretty bad at programming, but I did a lot of UI and design work for group projects in that class. The projects that were most memorable to me were a weird 3D genetics simulation game, and a 3D 1v1 tower defense game with helicopters. It was a lot of fun!

Since then I haven't worked on very much, but I've been getting back into Unity and C# (although I'm thinking of switching engines) and trying to come up with a good project to work on over the next few months. I'm thinking of making a mobile game of some sort just so I can finally release something completely solo.

As for you, it seems like you do have a game to show, so I'd love to see it and give some feedback. Feel free to friend me and message me if you want to talk more!
