Is Maze Mode just a soulstone sink?
Because past Zone 1, it seems like 50/50 that a sword upgrade even exists outside of the merchant (often verifiable with the wand map), and another 50/50 that it's even remotely reachable.

EDIT: It is, and seems to be built around the expectation of buying at least the sword and shield every time. Anyone going after the maze achievements, do a Genie run of Story Mode and save right before fighting him. You can repeatedly reload and kill the genie for 10 soulstones apiece.

Furthermore, the bosses seem to spawn 50/50 either with a red door and normal stats, or no red door and double stats. The problem is the maze isn't actually tuned around a boss with blindly doubled stats. In earlier zones it's usually easier than hunting down a red key, but by Zone 4 the double-stat boss is nearly impossible, and in Zone 5 you straight up fall about 80 points short of being able to damage the double-stat boss at all, nor does it have an altar to go past the gem drops. It was really very poorly implemented.

I've played many Maze Mode now, I think 10% of the time the game doesn't have a free sword, because in those case the shop is spawn on the sword.

I think only 10% of my games the sword is close by, most of the times the sword is available but you still need to kill many monsters and keys. It would be boring if the sword was free.

Also, Maze Mode is a very short game, you could just restart if you don't like the generated maze.

Finally, Maze Mode is the only place worth using soulstones for, and they are easy to get once you finish the main game a couple of times. So maybe Maze Mode is the end game area.

Disclaimer: I'm not the maker of the game so my percentages are anecdotal.

EDIT: I can finish Maze Mode without soulstones usually about 1 in 10 games. It's challenging and short and, for me, sometimes more fun than the main part of the game.

Zone 5 is a 50/50 whether it's even possible even with the merchant, lol. If the boss spawns as a no-red-door beefgate, he'll straight up have more defense than the entire floor's worth of attack boosts.

It looks like when the boss spawns with no red door it just blindly doubles their stats without really considering whether killing such a thing is possible at all.
