Sid Meier's Civilization III: Complete

Sid Meier's Civilization III: Complete

Turns take forever to end all the sudden.
Alright I was playing a game and two of my neighor civs went to war. Once I ended my turn, the turn would end like normal but then it freezes for a good 30 seconds or longer. This is really ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ me off since the turns are supposed to end quick in Civ 3. I've tried to access compatibility mode to see if that helped but I can't find it anywhere, even in properties. What is causing this and how can I fix it? Also my OS is Windows 8.1 (hey don't judge me).

Well looking at only the gameplay, turns can gradually get longer in civ3 as you reach the industrial, and then the modern era. The calculating of maintenance costs, corruption etc, and if you have animations on, and show AI moves etc, all that adds a bit extra to the turn switch. If you hold Shift, or have Caps Lock on, this speeds up all the AI moves that you see. Nothing you can do about the maintenance costs as this is on almost every building in civ3, and new buildings that you get by research, cost more in every era. Also, the more civs you have, the more calculations to be done. This is more noticed on maps that have 25+ civs.

No, its not that. I've played a lot of games into the modern era and they've never just froze for 30 seconds between turns. I know its probably the fact that Civ 3 doesn't work so hot with later OS's but I don't know how to access compatibility mode and when I right click properties, it doesn't show me the option.

I'm sure you can find out how to access that by searching online. I've mainly played Civ3 on Windows 7, but I have played it briefly on Windows 10.

I'm getting the exact same problem. Also, when two units are fighting, the game will suddenly freeze right before one of the units wins and I have to wait 10 to 15 seconds before it gets moving again. This has made the game almost unplayable. I'm using Windows 10. This never happened on previous versions of windows.

SOLUTION: If you are on Windows 10 and Civ 3 is running poorly, here is what you do:
1) In your steam library, right-click on civ 3 and go to Properties>Local Files>Browse Local Files
2) When the Civ 3 folder comes up, go to the 'Conquests' folder and right-click on 'Civ3Conquests.exe' and go to Properties.
3) Click on Compatibility>'Run compatibility troubleshooter'
4) Finish the troubleshooter to run civ3 in windows 7 version. The game will start automatically.

Civ3 should run normally now.

on windows 10 in 2025. This worked for me and fixed my issue! I was having freezes/loading circle at the end of my turn and it would skip battle animations and messages at the end of my turn.
