Have you tried waiting a little while without clicking again after selecting "Host"?

The game lags a little bit while loading up the submenu and windows will sometimes (incorrectly) identify it as a halt in the program and exit if you attempt to do something while it loads.

Hotseat. Wife and I do it. Skeptical this old game would be stable on a server.
