Sid Meier's Civilization III: Complete

Sid Meier's Civilization III: Complete

Unable to Run Conquests Edit
I've been getting an error message when clicking on the CivIII conquests editor. It keeps telling me that it can't locate CivIII Play the World or CivIII conquests. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling from Steam, however, that didn't help.

Is anyone else getting this problem or know how to fix it?

Thanks!

Which version of Conquests Edit are you trying to use, and where is the file located? There are multiple versions included in the files of CIVIII Complete.

Most people use Civ3ConquestsEdit.exe located in ...\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization III Complete\Conquests

Try accessing that file inside the folder and see if you are still encountering the same issue.

Doesn't work, gives 30 or so errors that it cannot find all sort of files , then loads up but if you load a map, it is obvious it really cannot find those art files and stuff as it is all messed up... standard steam installation, changed nothing and using the one in the conquests directory with the exe in compatiiblity mode for XP and as admin.
Can confirm this is still an issue. Please help?
I'm gonna copy that over here just for posterity.

I know this is an old thread, but this is mostly to remind myself in the future if I have this problem again.

My fix was that several registry settings were missing. When I manually created them, the errors went away and I was able to launch the editor.

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Infogrames\Civ3PTW
Install_Path="C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization III Complete\civ3PTW\"

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Infogrames\Conquests
Install_Path="C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization III Complete\Conquests\"

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Infogrames Interactive\Civilization III
Install_Path="C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization III Complete\civ3PTW\"

Note that these keys are for a 64 bit OS - for a 32 bit OS, drop "WOW6432Node" folder from the folder path (IE, "Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\\Infogrames\Conquests".

Also note that the "Install_Path" is a "String Value" entry inside of the folder mentioned. Additionally, the value in the above examples should be for the default Steam library folder. If you have a different Steam library folder, adjust the Install_Path values to the correct location.
Update: Put the registry keys in, now the first two errors are fixed but I still get a massive spam of "unable to find file" messages and the editor does not function properly.

Followed what someone else in that thread said about copying files into "Conquests" from the base and PTW "Art" folders and now it loads, but I've got one last problem. Even when run as admin, I get an error saying "Could not open file for reading." and the editor still largely does not function. I tried generating a map and it actually crashed.

Well the best way (I know of) to figure out the missing file is by using Process Monitor from Microsoft: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/procmon

This tool is a bit complex.

1. Click the Filter -> Filter ... menu item.
2. In the new window that opens, set these values in the drop downs:
Process Name
is not
Civ3ConquestsEdit.exe
then Exclude

3. Click add. This will filter out everything that isn't generated by the Civ3ConquestsEdit.exe
4. Click Ok to close the Filter window.
5. Launch the Civ 3 editor.
6. After the error message pops up (leave it open) scroll to the bottom of the entries of the Process Monitor.
7. Look for any results that are not "SUCCESS". You are trying to find an entry that will tell you what file is not being found at whatever path the editor is looking for so that you can then find that file and put it in a spot where it will find it.

It's a bit of complex task so good luck.
I've found a new problem. After moving the files, the game no longer loads. I've about had it.

Edit: Renaming the Art folder and verifying files fixed this issue but of course now I'm back to square one on the editor. Argh.
