Sid Meier's Civilization III: Complete

Sid Meier's Civilization III: Complete

My biggest issue playing Civ 3 on Steam Deck is sound.
I've been able to get the game working on Steam Deck - took a few tries regarding resolution and which Proton software to run with, but it works.

But there is one repeated issue I'm unsure how to fix: The sound keeps malfunctioning.

Problems include:
- Ambient sound effects such as (distant bird calls) get stuck and infinitely repeating the last second.
- Popping sounds during unit movement.
- At worst, sound and music malfunctions completely and becomes nothing more than what sounds like a drum beating forever; it continues even if I mute everything in Preferences.

Anyone else dealt with this, and if yes, did you find a solution?

If you googlebing the web - or even just this forum - for 'sound+issues', you will find out that this is not a Linux/Proton/Wine only issue.

In fact, WINE/Proton cannot magically 'fix' what is genuinely broken within the actual game (code)?

My personal solution is: turning sound off. This is one of those rare games where you do not have to have 'sound cues' to know what is happening on the screen?

Here is the solution.

A good effort, but alas, it didn't work. Nothing changed. I suppose things differ too much on Steam Deck vs Windows OS.

It's lame but when in doubt take a save, close out of the game, and reboot it. This works for me. Also as the other post said this is not an issue with the steam deck version. I' pretty sure it's an issue with how they uploaded the game to the web. My dad has the disk version and that version never has these kinds of bugs. But all web versions get the random music and sound glitches.

I've already closed and restarted the game many times at this point, so yeah, that sadly won't fix it either. Web version is the issue, huh? Well, wish me luck on finding a disk version for a 20+ year old game that will work - especially since Steam Deck doesn't use any disks.

Sound cues, thats not the importance, its more so nostalgia, and good games its all the small things, little things adding up, and sound is one of those things that is small but has a big impact on the enjoyability of the game. Its done right, not saying its something for all games but done right, like how Civ3 did it and a lot of these games did it. It has a big impact.

Was reading a Civ7 review, 379 likes, they commented,
"I never noticed how useful UI feedback is, but without the ching of spending coins, death sounds, or even anything, it makes things just that little bit more confusing."

basically those little sounds, they add up in terms of the enjoyment of the game

I can't even get the game to run! Any tips? I tried running Proton 5.0 to no avail.

No running at all, or what specifically happens?
