Monogame can't render chinese characters
I am pinning this discussion so that people see what is going on here.

I don't have access to a Chinese install of windows, however I am almost certain the issues of the game crashing in China relates to the rendering of dates and times. It is hard for me to test.

0.5.1.03 tries to fix this.

I have forced all rendering of debugging text to fail in a safe way. Hopefully if your game attempts to draw something that it doesn't know how to draw it will now keep running instead of crashing.

In order to render chinese text we would need to extend monogame or use a new framework for rendering text. We may do this in the far future but that is a big project to undertake.

I could use some help communicating these issues to the Chinese customers.

In the new update there is some work done on the font of the chat boxes, will this allow for non-roman alphabet? Or is it only a font change and/or size change?

Mainly a font and/or size change along with the new graphics, so they dont look so bad on a high res screen.

Actually the same happens with cyrillic characters. I.e. any non-latin.

I've done some design work on localization just to take inventory of what the project would even require for me to get it started. I'm posting this for the sake of transparency.

Monogame doesn't render unicode, it renders fonts and it renders them as sprites, which means to support anything other than the base english-latin alpha-numeric characters we need to:

  • Provide unicode translations for every string used
  • Design a binary format that allows localization data be loaded from outside of the core game code
  • Integrat the above with the steam workshop
  • Provide fonts for every language in every size and style currently used. If we currently use 5 different fonts, that means adding chinese would take us to 10 fonts and russian to 15 fonts
  • Conditional loading of font content files for different languages
  • Conditinal rendering of fonts for different languages (think every draw call of text)
  • string reference based text use where we reference a variable instead of having inline text. yeah that probably means rewriting every line of dialogue code and every line of UI code even for english text rendering to work under a localization system
  • upgrades to dynamic formatting for things like word-wrap in tooltips and dialogue
  • don't get me started on how numbers are formatted in different languages. If we ever do localization I am tempted to skip this step entirely and force US english numbers in all cases.

Many multi-lingual people have generously offered to help with translation which we do appreciate, however that's just the first bullet point above.

I want to ask!Does the game support Chinese localization now?If we want to make our own culture in the game, what do we need to do now!How to propose the text you want to translate!Thank you very much!Every time I ask the game, I take photos of the game with my mobile phone, and then I translate the photos into ai and experience the game. This kind of experience is very bad!The game is very good!But without Chinese, it's hard to get attention in China.I like the game very much and don't want it to be so dull.

@Allogonist .Dear devs. is the mono frame still impossible to render Chinese ?Really hope could play this game in Chinese. Play a si-fi gme in English is too hard to us.
