Ship can be created without airlock. ship cannot be docked without it.
I have played this game some time ago when building a ship costed nothing(there was some type of station capability points which determinated how big ship can be constructed)
and now i have build a costy ship but selected a bad blueprint - it had no airlock. ship was built but thats all - it cannot be docket to station by pressing RMB on it
if ship isn't docket you cant dismantle it and its just waste of resources.

From this point on everything is just some thoughts about game

i think it would help a lot if you could add some type of checks to determine if ship has airlock(so it can be docked and dismantled later) before building can be started.

and if i got it right you cant get 100% refund by scrapping ship. this means that you are wasting resources every time you have made some mistake in ship design. there is no way to quick save/load or simulate your ship before building(am i missing something?) which means your every build try will waste resources.
