Please do something about acquiring official ship design variants. If I happen to have acquired official design variants of ships when wrecking them, I found that all the damaged and missing components carry over to the design.

(NOTE: I recently deleted this, so I don't think I might be able to get this back. But it's still there.)

[2/15/2022, 1:45 EDIT] I found a damaged variant tucked away in one of my Ship collection. I took screenshots and uploaded them to my drive:

The results were...unorthodox. There were some parts I was able to mouse over as if they're "still there." Strangely, I can't select the "missing" modules by pressing spacebar.

I'll make sure the damaged variant remains in my design logs, if further testing is needed.
