Strange 8-bit melody playing when the game is running
Recently, I've encountered a strange problem: whenever I have Garry's Mod running on my PC, an out of place 8-bit melody starts playing. Wouldn't have been a biggie if it wasn't playing when the game window is on the background (the "silence the audio..." box is ticked in the settings). Even though the melody is playing periodically, it is annoying. Reinstalling the game didn't do anything, and I doubt this has been caused by an addon or two. I have two questions regarding this issue:

1) What could have been the cause of this?
2) If anyone had had this problem before, how do I make this melody stop playing?

Note that the melody starts playing when I've loaded a map; the 8-bit melody doesn't play when I'm in the main menu.
P.S.: Media player has nothing to do with this, the volume mixer on my PC says that the sound comes from the game (once again, the melody is NOT a part of the gameplay, it is played both when the game is running AND when it's screen is on the background)

you mean, one of my addons might have a virus that would make the game do that?

I think so..

I'm having the same problem here, i thought i had a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ virus on my computer, and then i hurried up to install Dr. Web CureIt Utility to do a quick scan (I don't use an Anti-Virus for performance sake, but i'm vigilant). Luckily, i wasn't really infected, but damn it's freaking annoying.

It might be a "desired" feature included in the mod/addon. Or it could be intended to be annoying, or is part of an ad. The music could be included locally in the addon itself and plays from your hard drive, or else it might be something like a backdoor that connects to an address online and plays something like an ad (in this case, music, but probably works the same way as "backdoored" addons that play ads.) So yes, could be like a "virus," but noting that viruses are malware that copy and spread themselves, and it is not something like that. But may well be an annoying "backdoor" type "malware," if it is not something advertised in the addon's workshop page as a desired feature. Or else the addon maker innocently included it and didn't mention it, which incidentally makes it annoying, without warning...
that's actually something to think about...

Have you tried remove the entire server content files by deleting the download(s) folder in:
Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\GarrysMod\garrysmod

Btw, I have a random question for you. Did you subscribe any of TFA VOX (Nier Automata for example) sounds that replaces the default UI sounds?

Also, if both of you have the exact same problem, and it is actually an addon doing this, then you could compare which addons you both have in common to whittle down which one is doing it. (Exception being if the addon maker put this in multiple of their addons and you have different ones with the same garbage in them, but probably you have the same exact one.) If you put all addons into a collection, this can be shared.

If you find it, don't open gmod, and note if gmod updates anything (this can be done by clicking "news" under any steam gmod workshop content update) to see what updates. Anyway, take the addon from the addons folder in /steam/steamapps/common/GarrysMod/garrysmod/addons (it will be a .gma file) and cut and paste it to some other place beside the Garry's Mod folder, so that it's saved and can be extracted and examined for either malicious code or a music file. Also unsubscribe from the addon, but bookmark it so if there actually is malicious code, it can be reported later. If it's only a music file, that file can be edited to make no sound and the addon reinstalled without it, so the problem is avoided without losing the usefulness of the addon. (Might be okay to just delete the music file, but the console may show errors that the file can't be found, so editing the file to just have no sound is probably best.) If it's a Lua issue, then the problematic part can be deleted, and the addon installed back and used like that. Don't resub to the addon, because the unedited one will be redownloaded. If anyone cares to go though this ruckus to install this addon as edited, tell me so I can type the instructions.
so i have to just crack the addon in question open with the files in the game's bin order, then?

i usually play solo, so the folder you've mentioned is empty (aside from another folder in it which is also empty)
and about TFA VOX - i have only the content itself, no sounds

also, my personal suspicion is that the patch itself has messed up the game (i haven't launched the game on the day it was released, I've noticed the melody on sunday). if that's the case with the game, is there a way to contact the developers about the issue, or at least inform them about the weird sound?

I couldn't find anything about this in the half-assed search I just did.

OP, did you try -noaddons -noworkshop yet to see if this is an addon problem or not?

trying right now. so far the game's been quiet, but it'll take me around 2 hours to figure out. you may be right, though... i'll keep you posted

P.S.: i've also noticed another sound playing when my game is running - an iphone notification sound which plays once. afterwards, it the same 8-bit melody

update: turns out you were correct - after ~81 min., the game has been quiet in the background. had to be one of the addons. should i let the mod maker know?

Since the melody is playing periodically, it's probably loaded from hdd only when needed. You could start garry's mod, open resource monitor and load a map. Go to hdd usage and check hl2 process. Wait for the melody to start playing again and see what file was loaded.
