Meal Maker Recipes - Avoid Malnutrition!
From reading a lot of posts of players asking for help, I have seen a common theme that people are struggling with malnutrition. This occurs if a colonist eats too many "Basic" meals in a row. A basic meal is a meal created with just 1 ingredient. The way the Meal Maker functions, it has 5 slots where vegetables or meat can be placed. If the vegetables and meats in the Meal Maker fit a recipe, it will make that recipe. Otherwise, it will only make basic meals.

The current recipes in game are:
Lettuce + Tomatoes + Peas = Salad
Lettuce + Tomatoes + Maize = Salad
Lettuce + Tomatoes + Onions = Salad
Lettuce + Tomatoes + Radishes = Salad
Lettuce + Radishes + Potatoes = Salad
Tomatoes + Onions + Peas = Salad
Tomatoes + Onions + Radishes = Salad
Tomatoes + Onions + Potatoes = Salad
Tomatoes + Onions + Maize = Salad
Radishes + Onions + Maize = Salad
Lettuce + Tomatoes + Chicken = Salad
Tomatoes + Potatoes + Chicken = Salad
Wheat + Mushrooms = Pasta
Wheat + Tomatoes = Pasta
Rice + Mushrooms + Tomatoes = Pasta
Rice + Any Meat = Pasta
Wheat + Any Meat = Burger
Maize + Any Meat = Burger

I'll end up doing an efficiency analysis on the best choices, but for now going all Wheat and Meat is an effective strategy in my opinion, as this will always result in Burgers being made if there is at least one meat and one wheat in the meal maker.

I completely missed this fact in my tutorial, but here it is in case it helps players with other early game problems:

I looked at the lists of plants and tried planting a combination of wheat, tomatoes, mushrooms and rice. I mainly makes pasta, but it's more long lasting than basic food and it has starch for bio-plastics.

Great observation! I think the real take home message is to not try to place a ton of variety in your biodomes just for the sake of variety. Instead, find the recipes you want to use and then place those plants only.

Ugh, that's so gamey and counter-intuitive. Literally the only reason this is a viable strategy is because of the stupid way people feed vegetables and meats into the food processor. And counter-intuitive because hey, I'm growing a big variety of foods but it doesn't ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ matter because the food processer never actually takes advantage of this, and just makes basic meals over and over, running through my medical supplies treating malnutrition and killing the base.

A fix to the UI for that damn meal maker would fix this, I feel. Maybe something as simple as increasing its storage from 6 to, I don't know, a lot more than that.

I agree with you, Bomoo. I felt the issue could be rectified by simply saying Vegetable + Meat = Advanced Meal, whereas Meat alone or Vegetable alone = Basic Meal. That's the way I originally understood malnutrition to work and I feel like that would rectify the current problems people are having with it.

Hey, I remember commenting on one of your lets play videos (NXTerminator579), again, I don't have the game, but I have done a fair amount of looking around for info, and I hear rumors that burgers cost 2 wheat and 1 meat product (any kind) and yield 2 burgers (instead of 1 wheat+1 meat = 1 burger). I also hear rumors that basic meals are made from 2 of the same kind of veggie, and I believe there are certain veggie-meat basic meals

That's what they were: rumors.
