No human would even think of following the Beholder (unless enslaved), so your recruitment options are all animals. The only humans with the courage to follow beholders are some druids who have ignored all of their druidism rituals in favor of studying how to summon a Beholder. Beholders are powerful magicians, Elder Beholders can cast lvl 1 druidism rituals and Eye Tyrants can cast lvl 2 druidism rituals.

As far as I remember, temporary insanity is an affliction that can happen to any commander. They will suffer the effects of insanity for a long time, then eventually go back to normal. I might be wrong though.
