What Era? mod
Download[www.dropbox.com]

This is a simple CoE4 version of my previous little What Era? mod for CoE3[www.desura.com].

All it does is to give you a message at game start as to what era (society) you are in. Intended for those, who like me, want to go with random for era but want to instantly see what era they ended up in.

Exception: The earliest standard era, the Dark Ages, is hard to distinguish with certainty from the following era, the Agricultural Period.

In my CoE3 version I went to a lot of trouble trying to guesstimate whether an early era really is the Dark Ages or it's the Agricultural Period – mostly based on a comparison of the number of farms to ancient forests (though checking some other terrain types too). However, it isn't easy to make such comparisons scale with different map sizes without some sort of division operator, which isn't in CoE4 modding. (There wasn't really in CoE3 either, but I could somewhat, if a bit clunkily, mimic one with the event commands there.) It may not be worth the trouble anyway.

If you're told you are in the Dark Ages, then you probably are. Though if, when you start exploring, there seem to be more farms than ancient forests, and/or a fair amount of brigands, chances are you are in the Agricultural Period.

The message is now delivered instantly at game start! (With the event modding of CoE3, the message had to wait until the second game turn, but the new event modding of CoE4 allows the report to be delivered instantly.)

Note to modders: This mod currently uses variables 640, 641, 642 and 643 (so you'll probably want to avoid using those particular variables). Also, for any future needs of variables in this or other mods of mine, I intend to use variables 644 and on from there, so you'll probably also want to stay clear of the rest of the 64x variables too. (I have no idea how many variables in all I should "claim" really, just give me as much space as you find reasonable.)

Edit 1: Changed link from MediaFire to Dropbox, since Steam now blocks MediaFire.

Edit 2: Link updated to new version of mod, for CoE 4.24, with better accuracy of its Dark Ages report and which can also identify and report the alternative eras added in CoE 4.21. (Also, to modders: two more variables used by my mod.)

We might want to create a centralized documentation of which variables are in-use and which are claimed for future use by modders. Figure it's best to start that early before we run into any serious conflicts.

  1. The file you should have got is what_era_4β.zip. You put it in the the directory that opens when you select "Open Mods Directory" at the bottom of the Mods screen (after you select Mods in the main menu).

  2. In the mods directory, just unpack the zip file. This should get you a mod file (text file) what_era.c4m as well as a subdirectory what_era (which contains the mod banner) in your mods directory.

  3. Now start the game again and select mods. Click on the What Era? mod to enable it.

Exit the mods menu and whenever you now select random for the era/society of a new game, the mod should give you a message at game start as to what era you ended up in.

I don't seem to get a text file but a C4M file. When I start op CoE4 it displays an error that it misses a banner or something like that.

Oh and I need a special program to open it(7zip) if I do it normaly it says there are no files in it.

The C4M file is a text file, and that part seems OK. However, if you extract the complete contents of the 42 kb ZIP file, you should have also gotten a folder (named what_era and containing the banner).

Both the c4m file and the folder (with the banner) should be in your mods directory.

I now tried booting up a computer with Windows (which I otherwise rarely do), Windows 8 to be precise, downloaded the zip file (42 kb) and then extracted its contents with the built-in capabilities of Windows (8), and I didn't experience any of these problems. I got both the text file (c4m file) and the folder with the banner, and I didn't need 7-Zip (which is a very good application, but, again, I didn't need it).

(Needless to say, I also don't see these problems on the Linux system where I made the mod and zip file.)

The link for this mod has been removed? Anyone have a link that works?
Here's a re-upload:

Edit: Google broke my link, and it isn't needed anymore, anyway.

Well, I realized an update to my What Era? mod was long overdue. In particular, the original version was incapable of recognizing the five alternative eras (“sub-societies”) added in CoE 4.21, and even misreported the Barbarian Scourge (an alternative version of era 4, the Fallen Empire) as era 3, the Empire.

The now uploaded version of this mod should with 100% certainty be able to identify every one of the five alternative eras as well as five of the six standard eras. Where uncertainty remains is, as before, in any report of the standard Dark Ages. There is then a possibility it might in reality be the next era, the Agricultural Period. However, the accuracy of the Dark Ages report too, should be considerably improved, thanks to a change documented for CoE 4.24: A sealed chamber (in Agartha) is now guaranteed in the Dark Ages. Meaning there are now two signature terrain features always present in the Dark Ages: the chamber in Agartha and a gold mine in Elysium. (Both of these can occur in the Agricultural Period too, though they are usually absent, and the mod will be fooled only if both happen to be simultaneously there.)

More info if, in the game, you right click on the mod.

Also, to modders: I am now using some more of the variables in the 64x range that I previously claimed. 640-643 now used and I might continue grabbing variables from there. So I hope you stay clear of that range. 😈
