German n*zi symbols
Dev, here is the German law, that should interest you. Bethesda got a permit for their Indiana Jones game: § 86a StGB

We could also get it but the amount of work to do it was too much for us to handle at this moment. The appeal can take up to a month or more and Steam just told us if you dont have the permission up to 1.11.2024 you wont be selling your game there.

Germany is our 3rd best selling country and with another project that we develop we just took the easiest route

Understandable, but something to keep in mind for the future

What's strange is that Easy Red 2 (an indie WW2 shooter of same vintage as this game) just added the swastika as a togglable option THIS YEAR.

I know the autor, Marco, he's a cool guy - we chose the option to correctly fill out the survery for german market and Steam just informed us that we wont sell the game if not censored. Maybe if you just do not click any options in the survery and just let it go you can get away with it.

But you risk that if somebody at some point goes to Steam and says hey they have swastika here and you said that there is no such symbols in your game then you're in a world of sh

The Nazi symbol the OP refers to is called Haukenkruz or Swastika. A symbol used long before German Nazi party by several other cultures who came up with the design independently. It is still used within Buddhism, Hinduism, and I believe some First Nation tribes within North America.
In 2018 the German criminal code Section 86a Was to be updated to lift the ban on the symbol they stole from other cultures, but some people love red-tape so...
Having a toggle option in settings should be the accepted norm for all games. IMO

Being in the UK there is no problem with this. I do repaints of WWII aircraft for a flight sim and have come up against this from some German model manufacturers.
What they usually do, if the demand is vocal enough, is to release optional 'Historically correct' re-paints of the aircraft where appropriate. Not on Steam of course, but usually on a third party site.

Nobody ever died or suffered under the hammer and sickle. East Germany literally starved under the USSR but i guess they can now pin their new star right in the museum.

The laws are just weird.
They stick the head into the ground and say like "what i dont see, is not there"
Seriously, noone wants to glorify it but it is history and to be historical correct in a museum! cant be bad.
Imagine all that war movies, if they would rework all symbols? Dont think anyone would watch them anymore
