I don't know how it works in your country. But I've served in a military museum in Brazil. Here, the legislation says the weapons, to be part of the arsenal exposed must have the firing mechanism inoperable (usualy by welding parts in armory). Same for vehicles (we had several tanks). But weapon racks in open air are not very common, although I''ve seen them too. I remember several on a WWII Brazilian veterans museum with 5 rare gewer43 lined up with 3 stg's 44 and 5 berettas 38 smg in perfect condition. Many other allied weapons where there too. Very strange really.
Regarding your post, I completely agree, it's something that was asked a long time, but devs said "it's on the to do list", when they rework the museum (no one knows when), and since i'ts a game, there's no need for safety procedures I guess, hehe. Anyway, the Canberra museum, as you said, have standart safety displays it seems. The one I've seen in Minas Gerais - BR, was separeted from the public with a chain line, in the open, THIS was strange for me.
Different display racks/cases are a nice idea, but I too have noticed the massive amount of pistols, rifles, medals and other gear I have accumulated. In time the variety of these items will likely increase as the devs continue. So what to do with all of these small items.
Sure, some can go into the various cases in the main hall of the museum.
But what about an unlockable feature with your skill points that allows you to add a side exhibition hall. This would give the player a new room dedicated to the smaller equipment they collect over time. Maybe even allow the player to add/remove and position the cases and display plates as needed.
For now, I'm waiting for more tanks, but this would be a nice future feature.
