Sherman Brit modified "Firefly" 17 pounder?
Just captivated by an intense world war two audio book history written by a (at the time) young Brit tank commander in action after the Normandy landings and onward.

Describing his squadron area activities especially his own troop engagements, the men, the tactics of rapid movement, killing and survival and most importantly his machines make for compelling reading/listening and creates a great interest in the varieties of the M4 Sherman which is topical here.

My personal attention was in his description of the destruction and/or capture of some of the high value targets of the German Armoured defences by his "Firefly" modified Sherman which accompanied his troop as the 'hard hitter' when required with it's 17 pounder weapon described as on a par to engage a tiger or even dug in Jagdpanzer units.

I have no idea of what these modifications particularly look like except for the chassis similarity but noticing DeGen's upcoming Sherman dlc thought that it may have a chance of inclusion.

I am aware that these units required the turret to be transversed to the rear in the bocage areas and were a lot heavier regarding their stock of different munitions and even slower than the 75mm's versions needing to be protected from the panzerfaust infantry units but their creation in the simulator would be great to see and pay full price for. I understand the commander had to leave the tank, unlock the barrel and get back in prior to firing in some circumstances which would have made 'life' interesting indeed.

It all shows that the Sherman was not a weak knee'd opponent to the very high end German armoured units as can be often assumed by modern media and some games etc: just saying.:mobilesteps:

I agree interesting varient. The germans recognised this and always took them out first and the 17 pdr had a serious fault it couldn't be described as accurate (see David Fletcher and american analysis), but if it hit.

You’ll sometimes see a Firefly with a distinctly different camouflage applied to the muzzle end of the barrel, even making it partially sky blue, to break up the distinctive look of that long 17 pdr. The idea was to make the Firefly less noticeable, in the hope that the Axis would go to work on the other M4s in the troop.

Firefly was still a Sherman at heart, with all the associated strengths and weaknesses. An interesting blurring of the lines between tank and tank destroyer.

I’m not excited by a whole DLC being devoted to the Sherman. I think the omission of the basic M4 was a mistake in the TMS lineup and it’ll be good to see that sorted, but I’m not looking forward to the very ‘samey’ job of restoring multiple variants. I guess it makes sense to do a batch of variants that have commonality (less modelling to do) and I’ll buy it because the TMS developers need and deserve a continuing revenue stream. Hoping for some of the really notable missing tanks in the next DLC set, though.

I agree, personallyI want more British tanks and the T 26 and T 60/70. Adding the russian spgs again is easy but doesnt add much.
