Ever been in a band? Frankly the first few weeks/months (sometimes even years) is getting good. You get good by working at your craft, writing songs, busking, maybe gigging some small places, until you're refined enough to be worth a signing and album release.
It might be boring, but I think it perfectly identifies what a lot of bands go through in the beginning. I'm in a "cover band" and we've yet to play a single show after jamming for the past 2 years. We couldn't find a singer, we can't all agree on the songs, some people don't practice, etc.
You can go on easy mode and try to get good ASAP, maybe screw with the setting a bit to avoid the early game, but that's part of the sim experience.
