So it was Shion the whole time, right?
Since the festival ended, Shion had been keeping Mion locked up in the torture basement, pretending to be her sister. So when you got those phone calls you thought were from Shion, they actually were. She was just pretending to be Mion, too.

When you and Rena arrive, she locks into Mion Mode and convinces you of everything, then tricks you into going into the basement with her. She had been torturing her sister, insisting that she call her Mion. She puts on a big show of Crazy Mion and Innocent Victim Shion.

Then, just before the police arrive, she stuns you, kills Mion, throws her down in the well, and goes back to her own identity, but half-pretending to be traumatized (only half because she really is ♥♥♥♥♥♥-up over killing her sister).

Then, when enough time passes, she goes to kill you, the last person left. Thinking her crazy-person mission was over, she promptly goes home and commits suicide.

Right?

Still haven't figured out the nurse thing, or why Rena isn't a cult member in this version.

So, you've seen "Meakashi-hen", then? You got things mostly right. I'll spoiler tag just in case you're somehow smart enough to have figured this out early.

Because that is her true name. Recall from "Meakashi" that the two often switched places because no one could tell them apart, and how they find out in "Meakashi" that the one we know as Shion (actually "Mion") was meant to be the successor, but because they were swapped at the time, the one we know as Mion (actually "Shion") ended up getting the tattoo and becoming the successor.

Of course, it's still insane and cruel to demand she "give her name back", especially at this point. What's done is done.

she promptly goes home and commits suicide.
It's an accident, remember?

I actually don't know what Makeshi-hen is, and so no, I don't think I've seen it.

And there wasn't anything indicating her death was an accident, suicide, OR murder, right? They didn't know.

"Hen" is the word for "story arc". Each arc (or "chapter", as MangaGamer rather inappropriately translates "hen") has a title, and each is suffixed with "hen". For the main 8 arcs, the titles are:
  1. "Onikakushi-hen": the "Abduction by a Demon arc"
  2. "Watanagashi-hen": the "Cotton-Drifting arc" (or is it "Organ-Drifting arc"?)
  3. "Tatarigoroshi-hen": the "Curse-Killing arc"
  4. "Himatsubushi-hen": the "Time-Wasting arc"
  5. "Meakashi-hen": the "Eye-Opening arc"
  6. "Tsumihoroboshi-hen": the "Atonement arc"
  7. "Minagoroshi-hen": the "Massacre arc"
  8. "Matsuribayashi-hen": the "Festival [Musical] Accompanying arc"
(The first four are the Question Arcs, which present the mysteries, while the last four are the Answer Arcs that give you the information to solve the mysteries and/or figure out if you already solved them correctly.)

So as you can see, "Meakashi-hen" is the 5th arc. If you have not read beyond "Watanagashi-hen", then I have two things to say: (1) you're doing pretty well, and (2) you should maybe not be posting in "Spoiler Discussions"; this forum is for discussing spoilers not only for the series so far, but for the entire series. I only recommend coming to the spoiler discussion forums after you've finished all 8 of the above arcs. That's why I put the above in a spoiler tag despite being in the spoiler forum, because I thought maybe you should not read it yet.

It seems like most of the stuff you hid was just background motive stuff unrelated to the actual solving of the actual mystery. Like, there's no way for someone to have figured out most of it. I do appreciate you spoiler-hiding it, though. (The give-away is that Shion, in that last scene, references an inside joke you had with her much earlier... Kei just thought Shion didn't exist then, so he attributed it to Mion)

It seems like, despite the inherent shadiness of including identical twins, this series CAN be trusted to have good, solveable mysteries. I just wish it was clearer WHEN each could be solved. I'd be working on part 1 if I didn't suspect it's unsolveable on its own.

Maybe, maybe not. But you shouldn't judge that until you've seen all of the question arcs. Only then will you have all of the information you're supposed to have to be able to solve everything.

Look again at my list above. You're only part-way through the question arcs. There's more mystery to come. Once you finish "Himatsubushi-hen", the solutions will start to be revealed. That said, not everything is spelled out, so you still have to do some thinking.

Also, you may still have some surprises. There is at least one thing that surprises a lot of people (unless they've already been through a certain other 07th Expansion series), even though there are hints to it scattered throughout the series, even from the beginning. That won't come up for quite a while, though.

Now that you mention it, I'm not sure myself. I didn't really pay attention to that part of what carp said. I probably know what it is at some level, but I'll need my memory jogged.
