It's a tradeoff.
Did not find what you wanted, but have cash? - you can get by on the store offers.
Have no money or don't like the offers? - find your gear.
One thing I'll say is - always take the Harvester medallion if you can.
You'll make so much money that the shop can save you a lot of time looking for armor, helmets, saddles, walls, etc...
But yeah, the guns in the shop are often not what I want.
Finding two double-shot krakens isn't a big deal if they're always accessible. But it is when they're rare.
And if your enemy out-looted you, then you played poorly. There are always several copies of the gun you want out there.
During the first round, everyone can only get up to blue gear.
2nd round only up to purple.
3rd round up to orange.
There's plenty of chests to find that weapon you want and you also have a chance to buy what you would like. You can also use voice chat to ask your randoms to ping it.
Either way, if everyone would be guaranteed the meta loadout, maybe that would be fair too, but it would definitely kill variety and make combat boring.
The last thing this game needs, is people running double pump shotguns all over the place.
Practice to play with 2-3 weapons very well and then your chance of finding one or both will increase.
The Corsair, Kraken, Longhorn, Vanguard, are all very good weapons and at the end of the day, a weapon alone doesn't decide how well you do, but your movement, positioning, timing, and aim does too.
Some weapons like the double shotgun are indeed cheap and I personally don't like such no-skill weapons, but if it's in the game and people don't mind it, I'll just consider myself the black sheep and shut up about it.
Nevertheless, this is quite fair the way it is and the small pool of weapon varieties also help, however this will change over the months as new weapons are added to the game. For the time being though, I'd practice with multiple weapons and then you'll never have the issue of not being able to find the one you want.
Also, the only reason someone would play only one set of weapons is because it's the meta and metas in games should never be let to settle. If there is one, it needed to be tweaked to throw things up.
I agreed with everything you said except this.
You can't say someone played poorly because they got out-looted by the opposing team.
RNG is a factor. I can open 10 weapons chests and find junk and my opponent can open 1 chest and find exactly what they wanted.
I wasn't outplayed. I was out-lucked.
This will only kill variety if there is no balance between different weapons. Ah, but there isn't any. So maybe need to make some first?
Most successful session shooters operate according to this model. I am uncertain in what universe not fair fight is enjoyable for everyone.
In a shooter with a wide range of distances and color gradation, it is a major determining factor.
imagine if counter strike have a looting phase for a whole 2 minutes, can’t imagine how bored people will be
this game is confused if it wants to be a fast paced hero shooter, a counter strike with all the bomb objective, or a battle royale with the looting phase and huge open world
You don't know what fair is then.
To me it seems that you belive that if you can get exactly what you want, the game will be easier for you, without taking into consideration that if you can do it, so can others, putting you right back into the position you are now.
The only reason you'd ask for such a thing, is becuase you are blaming your losses/deaths on not having your preferred weapons.
Everyone has an equal chance of finding the weapon they want at the rarity they need. The rest is skill.
