Six Years. Still Not For Casuals <Rant>
Six years later and things are still nuts, and not for the best.

The game's AI is still in a bad middle ground where it's complex enough that even within acts 1 & 2, the AI will instantly move just out of reach, yet it's simple enough that ALL the enemies behave that way. Roids and Bombers don't seem like the sort to pull ninja dodges, yet they move like hybridized clones of Neo and Spiderman. I'd rather have a stupid and simple AI that only gets harder from higher stats and occasionally ganging up on me (it makes sense in this case too!), rather than an AI that can read inputs or hitboxes (functionally what's the difference?). Either keep it simple or go all the way and have unique behavior packages for each type of gang member, including dumber ones for the non-clone gangs in act 1.

I've checked the Steam forums, and the main defense for this is some variation of "It's harder so it's better git gud." This is not a good argument/explanation if you want the game to become popular again. I understand not wanting every single normie scrub to come in and make the game or community bad, but you gotta do better than smack them away with "git gud." And before anyone says I lack the skills or patience for this, I have at least 24 hours in FightN'Rage, which has parrying, all kinds of "tactical" stuff, a game that is very hard, but not because the AI instantly backs away from your attacks.

Sadly I don't expect the game to change or improve. It's been at least six years and the people involved in this game seem to have most of their focus on River City Girls. I can and have learned how to play around the AI being a tryhard, but that doesn't mean I'm having fun while I do it. Which is the biggest problem I have with it: I'm not having fun.

I said this long ago when the game first launched.

That thread got deleted cause it actually caught on cause some of the characters have some of the worst move sets or and has characters in it just for the slight comedy relief.

the game was just a once over thing it will never get another remaster or anything
They came under some issues with one of their former members "hint hint" read up about it. They got had to deal with some legal issues.

But other than that this game was bland off the back. I have played both RCR for the NES and the GBA I found those two games to be more fun than this put together boring ham and cheese dry sandwich.

They were never going to maintain this game in anyway or allow mods at all.
This game would not be able to work well with them either for a few reasons
and those reasons even if explained would go over some of these snowflakes head
or the heads of the self obsessive narcissists.

yeah, you'd think that they could have at least made story mode something in line with the original and if that wasn't hard enough people could choose normal or hard, like every other game of the modern era.

i was waiting for this game a long time but got so frustrated with it and uninstalled. just now getting back around to it and am doing a lot better this time but i'm only using one character and grinding a lot to keep myself over leveled (even tho it kind of seems like they give the enemies more health and skill too)

really it has a descent single player experience. i actually finally finished it a while back and had a good time. it took me a bit to figure it out because the first time i kept switching around characters when they came available and was trying to use rudy, (big mistake) and ended up uninstalling. but i eventually gave it another go.

i would say just pick who you want to use and stick with them the whole time and get said character leveled up. then if you want to run through again with a different character you can. after i beat it the first time i was good tho. may run back through it one day but i can say i had a good time with it when it was all said and done.

I still play the NES river city ransom. Or renegade the very first river city ransom game for the NES. It was based on the movie streets of fire..this game was just created in hopes it would bring back some "Flash back" of the good old days but really.. devs these days look for a cash pay out and less quality and attention to details and all on games. when remastering etc.. look at SE... they screwed up FF VII

i really liked this one once i got the hang of it..? and i don't think renegade was ever on nes was it. only ever knew about river city ransom. at least thats the only one i had as a kid. isn't river city renegade just a remake of river city ransom? (edit: that's river city rivals showdown)

oh now i just saw the game you're talking about. it's just called Renegade. never knew that existed either. it looks like a :bc_Swearing: game tho. :) RCRU is way better than that

This game is really hard, but I think its very rewarding. The creativity you can have and spectacle of the combos is so satisfying once you get them down. I agree that the move sets some of the characters start with makes some much harder to grind than others, but it really pays. I've had so much fun exploring all the characters and there move sets, but it has taken an absurd amount of time. Once Rudy gets all his moves especially hair grab he really pops off and is the most fun character to play with by far. This is no joke my favorite game of all time but it takes a lot of grinding to uncover this diamond in the rough.

I have been playing this game a lot again recently and it's still probably one of my favorites. That said, I have noticed what you meant about goons still wiggling out of range on Normal mode in acts 1+2....Sometimes.

The unfortunate truth is that it feels like it's more of a character balance problem. Most of the cast - Glen, Paul, Provie, Ryan, (Secret Characters) all have normals that attack fast enough to tag an enemy easily after they attack you or try to back up, then they all have very easy combos, specials, etc that will typically floor the enemy or can mash results, especially once you get a few more moves for their standing combo. Bruno, Mike and Alex struggle more because they just aren't as fast at first and need more specific moves to capitalize on the dancing. Then there's RUDY, who I thematically love, but whose normals are so slow he can get interrupted by them mid swing most of the time IN ACT 1, if the enemy isn't just backing up out of the way of his molasses limbs before the combo even starts. Even once he gets Lariat you have to use it as almost a counter or just pray that you can get a little kick in first for some hitstun. Not to mention Hair Grab is probably his most essential non-Lariat move and is the hidden one. So the wiggling makes sense in that it's there to stop people from opening with the hardest hitting, slowest moves. But it really just stops slow hitting, heavy characters from basically functioning a lot of the time.

I think the biggest thing I'm disappointed they never fixed (and this also hurt Rudy more than everyone else, go figure) is throw damage. Early on IIRC throws hurt other enemies, but they nerfed it because throwing an enemy into a pile over and over became too "meta". And I can understand wanting to break that up when there are so many other fun ways to pummel thugs. But it really just ended up reducing options, hurting moves like Javelin Man and the entirety of Rudy for basically no point since most characters can TOD a mob anyway.

I am a Rudy main. I love wrestler characters in most games. However I have tried every character enough to find out which of their stats max out at 27, and even they struggle with the "wiggling" as you called it, especially in Act 3. However, Rudy in particular suffers soooo much from it, which sucks since this is a beat 'em up, I should be able to just go on a rampage and throw down like the Hulk (which especially applies to Rudy). I shouldn't have to use one or two moves/combos to succeed, and frankly, the only one who doesn't have to do that in act 3 is Paul, but he's a (really fun) buttonmasher character.

I've done the grinding and I know it's a diamond in the rough. However, despite Rudy being my favorite character, he suffers so much from the AI/computer's behavior that I've rarely gotten those high moments where he gets to go puny god mode on enemies.

Despite having unresolved bugs, some gameplay imbalances still present and the modding toolkit being MIA pretty much, I still consider this entry the best RC/kunio game on Steam hands down. Wish it would have some kind of a revival... it's worthy of being a cult status indie game. Devs would deserve that bit of satisfaction too all things considered (ks development, somewhat rocky launch, soundtrack drama, etc).

From what I've gathered, the contemporary audience favors mechanically simplified beat em ups, with spammable button or two and straightforward, easy to learn controls. I tend to struggle with technical characters myself or some super-deep combo systems relying on parries, but I can't push myself to play something like RCG etc either. I think RCRU has something for everyone, as long as you enjoy the rpg/exploration/adventure subgenre instead of a straight cut beltscrolling beatemup. Every year or two I have an itch to replay a round or two and level up a different character or something.

really wish the dev would come back and fix bugs/broken achievements. picked up the RCG games on the cheap via humble bundle last month and I'm really enjoying 1/2. havent tried RCG zero yet.

If you or anyone else have angel investors lying in your back pockets to give to the developers of this game, "wishing" is pointless. Hard reality folks is game development, no matter what level, isn't cheap.
