Did you read the reviews? Each negative review has text that explains the reason.

because of OpenTDD fanboys, UI in style of Win95, 4k TV controller players that can't find the scale button, acrade player that take visuals over game depth and can't play a game without a babysitting guide (thats why a interactive tutorial is in the making, nobody wants to read (manual, help) nowadays).

People are too harsh on a free, voluntarily-developed open source game... They expect the visuals and ease of a commercial game, and when they don't get it, they leave a bad review.

Also it is too complex for most players, apparently.

Simutrans is such a good game. You just have to give him a chance. Of course, if you focus more on superficial things, you can't discover the magic of Simutrans. I like the game so much. It's one of my favorites and I play it over and over again.

I don't really like the new looks. Is there a way to switch to the old view/game? I had a ton of fun a few decades ago playing this, but these visuals don't really fit me and can't really see anything. Thanks!

@tzar25 use another pak. change to another "visual design"

You can download a new pak at the store page, or from the in-game installer.

The fact that Simutrans is more difficult than OTTD means that it can be excessively challenging for the average user. Simutrans has issues with both a lack of information and an overload of information, making the learning curve feel like a cliff. Much of the information is hidden and often very ambiguous. For example, novice users may not realize that each citizen has a specific destination, nor do they know where to find this information. Even if they do find it, the ambiguous UI and tiny dots can make the experience confusing and frustrating...

Simutrans has some good points but there are too many negatives for this game. Making money is a bit too challenging to begin as opposed to Open TTD.
