Why the music is so terrible?

My ears bled out. I don't mind MIDI music, but never complained about music in TTD.

Can you make it not so painful?
No? But, have you ever thought about it?

Anyway, switched it off.

You can change the MIDI soundfont, that will change how music sounds.

Do a Google search for Arachno Soundfont. Download the .SF2 version and put that .SF2 file in your \simutrans\music folder. In the game go to Options->Sound. Click the select soundfont button on the bottom and select the arachno one.

This makes most of the tracks good or at least listenable, but some of them still have the volume of certain instruments set way too high. You can delete these out of the folder and replace them with any .mid you can find online.

There may be better soundfonts out there you can find and experiment with but that's an easy, free solution. You can apply this to any MIDI games you may have.
