Deathfog as in the Mother Tree quest? No I haven't. I've tried rushing there without doing anything else on the island, no dice.
Is Gareth there? Or is he missing, too?
I haven't heard of mods causing stuff like this but just in case, are you using any mods?
Gareth and the rest of Alexander's goons are there alive, just stuck in their stand-off animation. No way to interact with them other than force attacking.
I'm in fact using several mods (black cat, sir Lora, party size) but I've yet to see someone else experience this kind of bug.
I made a hard save before jumping to the isle, might try to deactivate all mods and see if it changes anything.
I meant those mods which turned black cat and sir Lora invulnerable
If so Alexander has most likely already moved to his scripted spot in the academy.
No, I've made a habit of exploring and opening the whole map first, fighting the Black Ring goons here and there but I've yet to enter the academy.
Also I've tried rushing there ASAP after landing (fighting just twice I think, the one in human temple and the one near elven temple) before going anywhere else but he's still dead.
Sounds like a bug.
The easiest thing is if you have a save from around the journey to the isle.
After an extensive search I came to conclusion that either this case is unique to my save or it's an extremely rare bug. Either way I'm putting the solution that worked for me in case it's not a unique case:
Required: this mod made by Empress Fordola that enables you to resurrect dead NPC.
This mod frequently disable interaction with dead NPC because the game marked them, well, as dead. You're unable talk or initiate scripted events. If you walk to the platform where Alexander is, the game will recognize that he's dead, and reviving him will lock the NPC in their stand-off animation with no further interaction.
So what you need to do is revive Alexander from a distance where the game cannot recognize and flag him as "dead". There's an elevated platform near a high-elf priestess that is suitable for this purpose. You can get atop said platform, revive Alexander, and then walk into the platform. This will trigger the scripted stand-off event.
