recommended level to engage on the the final areas?
It says I won't be able to return to the garden. What should I be doing to prepare? How do I know when I'm done preparing?

It doesn't really matter. Trash encounters are fairly simple and will level you if you're under. XP curve still stays exponential based on your level vs enemy's -- if you're underleveled, you don't stay that way unless you flee from everything.

Finally finished it. I didn't need to go in the abyss at all to level.

To anyone else trying to finish this, definitely make a save point before you go for the final areas. You'll know it when you see it.
