During Strength challenge, loaning out helmet via Spyglass nullifies defense upgrade
The steps to replicate:

* While playing Strength, get the Battered Helm's defense upgraded at the traveling forge
* Get the Spyglass event. Loan out the upgraded helmet for the night
* On the next floor, choose to get your helmet back
* The helmet will be at its original, un-upgraded defense value
* I haven't tested whether this happens with any helm other than the Battered Helm, but it seems plausible
