So, going f2p will momentarily influx newbies, who will then mostly quit. And most of new accounts that will keep playing will probably be smurfs, who won't be limited by the need to buy another copy anymore. That plus thee fact that you can only go f2p once makes me want to deal with those issues first before trying.
Some good points, and you're probably right. To alleviate most concerns, people that bought the game (And after going F2P there should still be an option for this) could have access to so called "premium" servers that cannot be accessed by the F2P crowd. This would allow the option to veterans and new players who bought the game to separate themselves from the smurfs.
Veterans ruining the game for 90% of new players is something that cannot be remedied that easily. It's probably even tougher on returning players, as they can no longer go into the newbie servers. One of the big reasons I haven't played in a long time.
I don't think F2P will be some miracle solution for this game, much less so than for some other games. But I do think the game and the players could benefit from it. There should be enough cosmetics to sell by now to make it viable. F2P has this tiny potential to make it explode in popularity once more, or attract a couple of whales willing to buy every little thing they can. Which may still end up being a net loss compared to just selling a couple of copies a day as it probably is now, but at least people everywhere may benefit from having a great F2P title available. Considering the track record of this company I imagine whatever few sales NS2 still makes are negligible compared to the big company picture anyway.
These "best players" should stop playing NS2 on their free time and sign up to the big leagues; if you can aim at an alien going mach speed with 80% accuracy, use that "skill" and become world famous.
The "ego stroking" this community does to closet cheaters is as bad as APB reloaded's community. Even worse with a lousy anti cheat. If the "cheater" becomes m8s with the server community owner/mods, their never banned and even pedestalled as the games best.
Game died because of people with high egos online. Enjoy cheating in a dead game.
