A serious discussion about NS3.
With the developers officially ending support for Ns2, all we can do with the future of this series now is work towards NS3.

I know this has been discussed countless times over the past 10 years, but now it's about time to have a serious discussion about it.

NS2 was not profitable for Unknown Worlds, it kindof flopped. At peak playerbase, it barely broke 10k players. That's why they shelved it, and went on to work on Subnautica, a game that was a wild success.

That's not to say, however, that Natural Selection is not a profitable idea, just that in 2012 UWE could not have properly prepared to release Ns2 for the audience that would exist ten years later.

The fundamental problem with Ns2 is its lack of interest to those who don't want to just play the same gamemode over and over again against players who've been playing for ten years.

The game is outdated, glitchy, exhausting and unrewarding to new players.

Here is my suggestion;

Maybe in the future, as they expand on the universe Subnautica and NS take place in, we might get a game that has a good story mode as a Frontiersman/woman, and so there would be substance to the game other than the multiplayer aspect. It would expand the lore, add something to do singleplayer wise, and would fill out the game, making it feel complete.

I'd say, add a more robust multiplayer, more evolved for 2023, rather than 2012. Have a legitimate rank up system, cosmetics, diverse game modes, etc.

I mean, imagine if they made a game where in the multiplayer tab, they had a mix of new, and the old gamemodes; Classic RTS/FPS (Call it Conquest or something), CTF, Team Deathmatch... while also adding the gamemodes like Fade Defense, Ns2_Large, Sentinel, Combat, etc to retain what people love about Ns2.

It could be an incredibly unique modern game if it had a story mode, modern multiplayer experience AND an optional ability for us all to clamber into lobbies made specifically to play like a more polished Ns2. It'd be phenomenal, sales would go through the roof, veterans would still be able to play a polished version of the original game, Unknown Worlds would have released their third banger game, everyone wins.

I know it seems like a pipe dream to want NS3 to be released but remember that communities can band together and make big things happen.

If you want our dream of NS3 to happen, the best way to do so is to organize a realistic team of developers, graphic designers and programmers to create it as a passion project.

If you get far enough, UWE might consider it worth an investment, and if they jumped in to help, the game would basically be guaranteed to succeed.

Of course, the option *is* there to simply ask UWE to start developing it, but they've gone on record stating that they're moving away from Natural Selection and Subnautica, and attempting to diverge their gamebase. So likely, unless they see dollar signs in their eyes for NS3, they won't be interested in developing it.

That means it is up to the community to decide whether this is when Natural Selection dies, or when it is reborn.

Personally I would love to see more lifeforms and weapons whenever NS3 happens

A while back I would say NS3 wouldn't happen because of their stance against "firearms in games".

but Moonbreaker has characters with guns so I guess their stance changed, so anything is possible.
good luck with that

They built the whole game on godawful netcode(whatever the ♥♥♥♥ it is). Even if you get really good, it makes no sense half the time how you got killed. From your point of view you got spit + 1 bite and you died. Yet from his point of view you had to munch for 3 bites.

You literally have to be a time traveller to play this. And sort of tactic is thrown out the window as soon as you die to ♥♥♥♥ you had no control over.

If they fixed that in NS3 I'd definitely play it. As soon as it becomes another you die to shots/bites made in your future past, they can go f themselves.

Even ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ oldschool lag where you have to aim after them, would be better that this crap.

Or make the bullet spray require control the recoil like in CSGO.

I've always felt the lack of recoil was strange and off-putting. A shotgun should not be so easy to wield. Nor should a handheld HMG be pinpoint accurate across the map. Very strange design choice, and one I'm not that fond of.

The strange deaths by "lag" is actually very normal in FPS online games. It's just much more obvious by melee, as the distances make it very obvious. Theres plenty of other games where you die around corners from being shot with a gun.

Typically games with melee combat have significant delays in swinging/attacking and slow movement mechanics in order to disguise the issue. NS2 is a bit unique in that you have extremely fast moving melee.

subnautica 2 here we come
And I want NS1 in once again. With all the features we originally wanted... physics (2006); destroyable parcours (level) (2000), lots more features and functionality of interaction with the game....
analog keyboard... Access to program AI like in carnage heart... possibly portals like in Prey (2006)... also, I want a upside down camera when walking as skulk.
And more possibilties to climb when being a Soldier. Can be a german or french ... does not need to be nation restricted. Why cant I configure my look myself? in 2023 STILL NOT THERE?
After HOW FAR we did come between 1995 -2010, why the jetlack?
like in real life.... there is SO much laying on the ground, gold why dont you take?

NS3 isn't coming, If you want a game like NS your gonna have to make it yourself,

The time for a successful NS game has probably past. UWE burned through all the good will they earned with NS1 a long time ago. This game had potential initially, but instead of expanding on NS1, they kind of took NS2 in a different direction, losing interest in NS2 didn't help either.

I don't know if NS1 + modern gfx + new features would have been the winning combination, would've been nice, but we'll probably never know.

Pretty sure focusing on lore and gameplay would be the right move. Obviously not abandoning multiplayer, but rather giving singleplayer its due attention.

I feel like the cool kids who played NS1 didn't come to the after party.

I would personally like to see open maps, like exposed to the elements somewhat. For example maybe a forest with tons of trees, or expansive canyons, or perhaps even snowy biomes or swamp biomes, entire zones that can get infested and infected. (And have the visible spread of infection be a bit more random)

344 builds isn't 'losing interest' ....

Well when the game was turned over to a community development team while they focused on Subnautica or whatever the game was called, that's what I'm talking about. They did come back, but damage done.

Outside of the very dedicated community members, everyone else pretty much lost interest too. A roughly 300 world-wide peak player count game is as close to dead as you can get.
