But at least place a few clog towers in front of you so you have cover when you build. Not placing at least a 2 clogs high tower (or two) in front of you is a serious mistake. You're dead meat if you don't.
And don't worry about skulks fighting at the door, you're bait enough for marines as a gorge so that skulks should win the fight if soldiers target you first.
I think I saw it recently in a 6v6 match with a very experienced commander, he was gorgein his own hive, didn't expect marines, didn't put a few clogs, got rekt.
If its a hive location where the door is too big and open like elevator on tram just put down hydras out of view and web the entrance. It gives you notice to escape and time for the team to come, plus the chip damage will make the marines 2 bites. Periodically throw babblers at the door too like when youre adrenaline is bottoming out so that theyre already at the door when someone is coming. If you layer the webs just right (which you can do on any geometry) they will be forced to shoot the babblers leaving them vulnerable to skulks or a spit if the skulks don't finish the job.
Either way fighting with skulks at the door still makes more sense than potentially watching them die and being left there building a hive at 60 percent. A vulnerable hive at 60, 70, even 80 percent if its more than a few marines incoming, isn't worth anything to anyone.
