Looks like the player numbers just now hit an all time low in the last 30 days. The average amount of players dropped below 100: 99.9 with a -3.5 % monthly loss. This hasn't ever happened before.

Looking at last month's negative game reviews they all claim NS2 is too hard to get into as a new player.

If Natural Selection 2 is to survive this should be addressed and I also suggest organizing monthly in-game events of some sort. Honestly not even free weekends or sales are going to help now.

Devs have all but abandoned NS2 at this point. Development has stopped, all future balance can only come through community balance mod. So, it's up to community to improve newcomers' experience. Sadly can't just make a mod for it. But can at least try to be more understanding to newbies, I guess. Explain things to them and not kick if they fail. (Limit cc/hive on min hours tho, so newbies fail doesn't result in needing to restart the game...)
