LOL, about online
https://www.gametracker.com/search/ns2/?sort=3&order=DESC&searchipp=50#search
20 not in night.

Was the developers' strategy wrong? with a focus on the old player base. Obviously, someone is constantly leaving the game and there is an online growth if more new players come than leave. in my opinion, there should have been a focus on new players, this is a variety of games, weapons, tactics, and even timings on different servers. ranking has slowly killed the game. ranking is standard, there is no variety. mods gave variety, but the developers focused on supporting ranking. I have now made 12 interesting Quake 3 servers, where the main weapon is shotgun, then I will finish the balance for 4-5 minecraft servers, they are very different in gameplay and a set of mods, 2 servers are almost ready. after that, I will start the servers, but although I have 10 hosts, it will most likely be a localhost with bots. why do I need live players who break the balance with bots. it's more convenient for me to play on the localhost, my ping is 6-8 there, and I can even stream over 4G Internet without any lags, I've already tried. I waited 2-3 years and now I can make a good single player game with NS2-based game. I hope the new updates haven't broken a lot of mods. another 2-3 months until I finish the balance on the minecraft servers. it should not be too simple or too complicated, but should be such as to captivate, so that the player feels that all the possibilities are in his hands, and does not feel the frustration of constant death.

Not interesting in quake 3, I guess you better put your ad into quake champions forum
if each round would dynamically change timings, weapon damage strength, within some limits, armor, speed, it would not allow PRO players to strongly dominate over beginners. in principle, this could be done using mods, having several configurations for each map.
Of course the PRO players would start crying, but it's good for beginners. I see online has decreased by 2 times in 3 years.

firefall is a much better example of a game that got killed by focusing on wanting esport focus ^^

also you need to realise what players want and what "pro-players" want are very different.

pro-players want predictability; you don't train for thousinds of hours and then be happy that you did everything perfect but something rng made you lose.

norm-players want cool and fun; and both cool and fun are enhanced when positive unpredictables happens, and cool when something really hard is accomplished with flow and ease (many other theorise but honestly these are the once which seemed the most detailed in how-to).

so the goals of the two are almost complete opposites, and every game which has a really healthy solo-team-player experience and a really healthy pvp scene has so by splitting the two completely and having very different ways to optimize the two play styles ^^

also esport is to make money, competition, test skills, etc. in general; (will have very few active players in any other aspect of the game bc of the effect of this focus)
the other is to created great experiences ^^ (will have tons of players, but not a good competitive tournament scene; as we see with mmo's that no matter how hard they tried cannot establish a serious or large scale esport enviroment, and man have they tried).

the two needs very different approaches.

why would you play a game where your skill doesnt matter
if its fun and give me a good experience tyvm ^^

skills always matter question is how much it should weigh, should you be able to do 1v100 and win or 1v10 or 1v2? where is the line you want skill to stop at and how much value should each mmr point, for lack of better word, give you? ^^
and if you are worse than others do you never get to get any success? why would anyone but the very top then keep playing (poke) :P

in sc2 its about apm effeciency and speed, in cs its about twitch reactions and precision speed, in mmo's it's about gear setup and skill rotations, in tww3 it's all about army builts and knowledge etc.

it's all about what skillset you want valued and how much value you want people to gain from it.

in ryl2 endgear made you a oneshotting immortal, boring and dumb imho;
just to point at an extreme case of "gear weigh vastly higher than everything else).

Gametracker is soo old it doesn't even show stuff correctly. The only way you can get more players coming in is self advertise. Link up with streamers and people on youtube. Wherever, put don't put any money into it.
