This game has never run for me..
To be specific it runs as in boots up but actually in game its like a slide show? unplayable.. No idea why.

Core i5 2500 3.3ghz
16 gb ram
GTX 1060 6gb

Weird as because much more powerful games run smooth as.

get something like Riva tuner statistics server (comes with msi afterburner)

see if your graphics card cranks up to boost clock or stays at idle

see if your CPU is running at 100% for some reason

disable full screen optimization (right click the .exe, properties)

You should be able to run the game with that rig, so there must be something going on.

There are also a couple options in the 'General tab' for options.

'Physx GPU acceleration' and 'Physics Multi-threading/. Play around with those, might be an issue there.

Under the 'Graphics tab', make sure it is set to 'fullscreen' and turn the 'disable full screen optimization' ON for the games .exe, like da_nibbest said.

Make sure in the 'Graphics tab', select D3D9 for 'Device'. It is the very first option.

Try off any other game 'overlays' for any other applications you are running, like Discord. Having multiple overlays turned on at once can cause a lot of issues.

Hi,

as other have said please make sure you have no Directx overlays running with NS2 and your anti virus solution isn't treating ns2 like a malware. Both can cause serious performance issues. E.g. I have seen the MSI Gaming tool bringing ns2 down to 24-26 fps on high end specs.

If you are sure such software is not running at your pc try to follow these steps to provide us with a performance log:
Type "p_logall" without quotes in the console (~ key or whatever is above tab and next to 1) whenever you want to begin recording in game. Please wait until you at least have spawned before using the command. To end the performance logging you can either use p_endlog in the console or just wait for the round to end.

Afterwards navigate to your appdata/home config folder ( e.g at windows %appdata%/natural selection 2/)
You should now see a new profile log called <timestamp>.plog .
Please zip it/compress it, upload it to a cloud drive of your choice and send me a link.

This will give us a frame by frame analysis of what is going on, so try to pick a time when you can best reproduce your lowest performance.
Don't record for longer than 30 minutes, and don't record for shorter than 5.

The msi gaming software was just an example. There are various DX overlays causing similar issues with ns2. Another common offender is razer's synapse DX overlay.

Do you have a integrated video card too?

Maybe the game isn't using your GPU?

STEAM overlay maybe? you have that for sure, try disabling that.

other than that, in nvidia control panel, manage 3d settings, program settings, if you cant find NS2 in the dropdown, add it manually, power management mode set to "prefer max performance"

Do you have a razer mouse with Razer Synapse installed?

I've had problems with that in the past.

If you do, try and enable Raw mouse input in the games controls. That was always how I fixed the issue with games that gave me issues.

Other than that, I can't think of what else it could be.

It sounds like something is throttling. Check your GPU and CPU clock rates. Check temperatures (although I don't think there is a heat issue since you have the problem the moment you play).
Playing both, with msi afterburner and razer synapse ns2 fine for years.
Also you haven't mentioned the OS, so I assume it's a modern Windows x64 OS
