Couldn't initialize the renderer device
I could play NS 2 before. After I updated NS 2 today. The FPS was still low, so I deleted the NS 2 folder in the AppData for default settings. Then I couldn't open NS 2 anymore. I got the error message: couldn't initialize the renderer device, and I tried every method on the forum, but still got the error. Any detailed help will be greatly appreciated!

I have the same problem, I have´t fixed it but the game still works on a other (windows)account

i have honestly tried everything now, new drivers, re-installing, verify integrity of game cache, all solutions posted on this thread and the other one that is linked.. but as soon as you double click the icon.. it kinda opens a game window but it is black, then it closes and opens the fatal error box. This is ridiculously frustrating

@Sollo_

1) In your Steam Library, right-click on NS2 and select "Properties."
2) Click the "Updates" tab.
3) Uncheck "Enable Steam Cloud synchronization for NS2."
4) Click "Close."

I think I would wait for new update to fix these odd error.

@Captain Taichung

Yeah i found it and un-checked it, still no luck with anything.. oh well, i suppose we just need to wait for the next update.

If you are using opengl and an intel card you are going to have a bad time.

To run NS2, you are going to need to suppoort OpenGL 3.1 bot on your hardware and in the software that runs it.

The fix, if you are running on windows, is to remove the system_options.xml file in %appdata%/Natural Selection 2/. this will reset you video settings and cause you to use the directx 9 renderer when you restart the game.

If you cannot start the gmae after doing the above it means that some how you have not installed directx 9. look in the ns2 install directory and there should be a folder called redist in it should be the installers you need.

I solved the error by luck. I've seen a solution like this

go to: %appdata%/Natural Selection 2/system_options.xml
make it:<device>D3D9</device> .

I had done that, but didn't work, so I tried to make it :<device>D3D11</device>, then I can open the game finally!
