Always timeouts and can as such not play the game

I am not using a powerful PC, no dedicated GPU and it's an i3 7130U, but I *am* using an SSD.
After going through all the loading steps when joining a server, I just time out and get kicked back into the main menu after a small delay. Any ideas why? A local server started through the listen server button works. I am using a standard Windows 10 installation if that is relevant.

I tried removing system_options.xml to reset my settings, and it still doesn't work. I'm assuming this is just a bug with the game?

I have deduced that this is due to the loading process just being too intensive, and I thus time out when loading. Can the timeout maybe be increased on the client side? Or is there anything else I can do?

To elaborate: I can play the game seemingly fine once it gets past the loading screen. I remember having similar problems (slight freeze when loading ends) when I was playing on more powerful systems.
