Missing executable

Trying to start Linux-version gives error "missing executable": it is apparently trying to start Windows-version "ns2.exe" which does not exist with the Linux-build of the game.

Start-up information (depot?) is wrong for Steam?

kazereal i know your post is ancient, but in case someone else is looking, the answer to your question is that the linux version has been unsupported for a few years. Annoyingly, steam defaults to still downloading the old linux files. What you need to do is go into steam game properties and force the use of proton under compatability. Then it will download the up to date windows files. Also use the proton 7.0, as of writing it doesn't like proton ge
