unit pathing is the worst i've ever seen in ANY videogame
the game is unplayable at higher difficulty settings in later eras because you have no way to direct your troops other than "defend buildings" or "engage enemies." on lower difficulties rebels and invaders will usually only attack one or two places at a time, which is feasibly defensible, but on higher difficulties you'll see like 5 or 6 different attack points. Every one of your units will path to either the same enemy squad or same defensive building and just let the guerillas or invaders burn the rest down. Is there a fix for this? I really want to love this game but this is game ruining if you choose to play a low liberty/high rebellion playstyle.

Build lots of watchtowers with the machine gun attachment at the point where they attack from. If this doesn't kill them it will definitely slow them down.

I also want to bite into my keyboard, when I see the tanks moving on sidewalks at have the pace than a normal van.
A decent delay strategy is to place watch towers in the rebels' path and quick build them with extra money. Rebels will stop at every tower to attack it. This gives your soldiers valuable time to finish their coffee, tie their boots, and run to their bloody workplace.
I haven't played higher difficulties or missions with an emphasis on combat yet. That said there are definitely times where I'll be trying to build something in an awkward location and watching my builders take forever walking through a jungle when rapid ocean transport is available can be frustrating.

They tend to come from the same few places on any given board. Pairs of towers in the right places on max budget will usually slow them down until the aircraft carrier can get planes launched.

You also might want to keep your fort, as those soldiers seem far more responsive than those in the barracks. Also also, if you build the ministry one of the minister bonuses is that the police stations send out squads too.
