How to choose magic.
My Space Knight has level 5 Giga Wind, Giga Fire, Giga Ice and Giga Star. I think they all do the same base damage but the Wind, Fire and Ice get 25% more damage because he is a Space Knight.

His affinities are 72 Wind, 0 Fire, -50 Ice and I think Star is always zero.

He has level 25 staff skill. Does this affect affinities? If does increase spell power to 175% though.

The enemy has 50 Wind, 4 Fire and -50 Ice. Which spell do I use?

I think if I use Wind, I do 172% x 1.25 = 215% base damage, but the enemy block 50% = 107.5% base damage.

I think if I use Fire, I do 100% x 1.25 = 125% base damage, but the enemy blocks 4% = 120% base damage.

I think if I use Ice, I do 50% x 1.25 = 62.5% base damage, but the enemy takes 50% more = 93.8% base damage.

I think if I use Star, 1 do 100% base damage, enemy takes 100% base damage.

So, Fire should be my choose.

Is my understanding of the affinities correct?

Somewhere in there I need to factor in the 175% Staff power. I think, for example, in the case of Fire, it goes:

I do 100% x 1.25 x 1.75 = 219% base damage, but the enemy blocks 4% = 210% base damage.

Any comments?

affinities are how more prone you or enemies to that type of magic..

anything <0 means you/enemies are more susceptible to that magic (0 = normal damage, - more damage, >1 less damage)

in your case if your enemy has say -60 ice, you need to attack them with ice

if your stats had -50 fire, you'll need Firefighter residents to boost your fire defence so its >0

this may help you:

If I am correct(it's been a while), you don't lose power with an element if you have a negative value on it. Your -50 Ice should be functionally identical to your 0 Fire for the purpose of casting those spells, so if everything else is correct, it would be 100 * 1.25 * 1.5 = 187.5% total damage. With that 175% spell power from Staff mastery, it becomes 100 * 1.25 * 1.5 * 1.75 = 328.125% damage.

When you get the chance, I highly suggest looking into getting 100 Firefighter, Aeronaut, and Cryophile onto equipment for your Magic Knight. This way, she'll have a constant 50 resist at worst in one element, and IIRC the other elements cap at 99% resist, which will also mean that all your elemental spells are that much stronger.

Similarly, look into having her raise a Mage/Skull pupil, or reincarnate into a Mage/Skull, so that she can obtain spells stronger than Giga.

If you raise one or two extra Magic Knights to Level 30 on the side, they can use the classes Charge and Anti- spells to amplify the elemental resist of your main knight so that she has max resist in all 3 elements, and/or reduce the resist of an enemy below -50.

Which equipment should I shop for that always has Firefighter, Aeronaut and Cryophile?

http://akurasu.net/wiki/index.php?title=Makai_Senki_Disgaea_2 if you check the item list, it'll show whatever innocents are automatic.

Some items that are forced to spawn those innocents: Sylphid bow for Aeronaut, Salamander bow for Firefighter. Seems that only Leather Jacket is forced to spawn Cryophile.

Muscle items, and I believe Emblems as well, tend to have the elemental innocents somewhat often. It is random, but with Leather Jacket being such a basic armor, it might be faster to hunt Muscles/Emblems.
