I would suggest playing the games by order of release instead. If you play the latter games first, it's hard to come back to earlier titles that lack QoL features you have become accustomed to.

Also best not to play D2 since it isn't a sequel to the first one. It's a retelling with some changes. Play it after Disgaea 4 I suggest.

Except for the fact that Disgaea D2 is a sequel to the first one, and this isn't even something that can be reasonably argued. It's events only happen because of what happened in the first game, and has clear references to things that happened in the first, or only make sense at all if you played the first.

To name off some details that connect DD2 and D1: Flonne is already on Laharl's side when the story starts and is treated as if she has been around for a while, there is mention of Gordon and co, Celestia and the Netherworld have some degree of friendship going on, Sicily exists, Baal fight has Laharl state what he learned after beating Baal in the first game and more.
