Got those mid level, grinding blues.
So back end of run through three (so done Adell, done Axell, nearly done Adell a second time).

I beat the Prism rangers. Then I grinded item world to beat Laharrl for the first time and then grinded it even more to beat Laharrl for the second time (bearing in mind Flonne was Level 512, my fire magician was roughly 400, my ice and wind magicians and my best fighter, my healer and Tink were roughly 350, Adell was 250, and everyone else was strung out between level 100 and 150 level 1,000 Laharrl was ultra tough. I won by changing tactic and using my magicians to reduce Laharrl's attack not to damage him and because Tink maxed out luck in item world and got super tough weapon and armour).

I'm kinda stuck now. I've got slightly more than half the maps. I thought the felonies to unlock the extra battles were group - they weren't which makes a minimum of 16, then 50 more felonies to grind.

I did the set of challenges culminating in the zombie lord battle but ended up not wanting to level up a second knight just for extra throwing. And then that's one battle and ended.

What's the best sequence to unlock extra content without too much grind ?

"Extra content" is a bit vague, but I suppose the next step would be to get Priere and Marjoly if you don't have them already (the former needs you to have 66 felonies on a char and pass/complete the bill before getting Etna, and the later just requires you to have 99 felonies on someone). If you don't care about them or don't want to bother gathering more felonies for now, you can re-clear the normal maps and then unlock and beat the Dark World stages. After that (or during it, if you want a little break), you can unlock the battles with Zetta and Baal (need to clear 10 and 25 DW maps, respectively).

If you're not feeling like it, you can go in the item world and look for any pirate maps you don't have yet, along with collecting specialists, felonies, stealing items and whatnot.

Maybe going after the alternate endings? They're not that important and it's kind of annoying having to reset the current cycle/playthrough, but it's there as an option. Just either don't start or wait until you're finished with the dark world, as your progress on that is reset. Oh, and whenever you start another cycle (on Adell mode), do yourself a favor and grab an Accelerator (use 3 Defender of Earth cellphones for the bill to appear).

As for how much you have to grind... it really depends on how you play the game and what you consider "grinding" (does it include farming lovers, weapon/skill mastery/felonies, etc?). For example, I cheesed the fights with Laharl so I didn't have to grind as much (I used a lv 200-ish Skull to beat the first stage, and the other I used Flonne after teaching her some spells). Zetta is lv 2000 and Baal is lv 4000 (without SEBs), but you can probably beat them with what you have now if you don't mind cheesing the fights.

I've been using item world to build up my kit and search for maps. Laharrl is just over 1,000, Olivia my healer (and star mage) is 650, my fire mage is about 600, my main fighter is about 375, Tink (a real killer) is about 450, as are my ice and wind mages, Flonne just over 500, Gauntlet my knight 250, Yuko my lady samurai just over 200, Lisa my thief just over 200, Padawan my Galaxy Mage about 350 (so versatile).

Everyone else is 120 - 175. I can take most item worlds starting at level 200 but not a lot beyond that because my weaker characters are worthless at that level. Got the Druid map now but I think I still need 8 maps.

Use stack attacks, just have your strong doods lift the ones who need levels.
